UMW\u2019s Colin Rafferty will be featured on \u201cGetting to Know the Presidents,\u201d set to begin broadcasting Saturday, Jan. 6, on the With Good Reason<\/em> public radio show. The program, which airs in Fredericksburg on Radio IQ 88.3 Digital<\/a> on Sunday at 2 p.m., explores America\u2019s Commanders in Chief, including a comparison of Donald Trump\u2019s first year in office to that of other U.S. presidents.<\/p>\n

UMW Associate Professor of English will be featured in “Getting to Know the Presidents,” on the With Good Reason public radio show, starting Saturday, Jan. 6.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n

If there\u2019s one thing Rafferty \u2013 a Mary Washington associate professor of English and teacher of creative nonfiction \u2013 knows better than prose, it\u2019s the United States\u2019 45 presidents. His current manuscript, a collection of essays about each of them, includes pieces that range from \u201cThe Fear\u201d about Martin Van Buren and \u201cBully\u201d about Theodore Roosevelt to \u201cWhat They Said About Him\u201d about Barack Obama and \u201cThe Imagineer Considers Tomorrow\u201d about Trump. Written as palindromes, death songs, prayers, movie scripts and more, Rafferty\u2019s work has appeared in such prestigious publications as Brevity<\/em>, Cobalt<\/em>, Juked<\/em>, Parcel<\/em> and Waxwing.<\/em><\/p>\n

\u201cReading and writing about the presidents has let me explore\u00a0both\u00a0American history and the expansiveness of creative nonfiction,\u201d said Rafferty, who read a biography of each president before penning his essays. \u201cI\u2019m excited to get to share what I’ve learned with listeners and readers.\u201d<\/p>\n

Rafferty, who holds a master of fine arts degree from the University of Alabama, also wrote Hallow This Ground, <\/em>published in 2016 by Break Away Books. Inspired by monuments and memorials around the world, the collection covers landmarks as distant as Holocaust memorials in Poland and as close as the battlefields of Fredericksburg.<\/p>\n

In addition to rookie years spent in the Oval Office, \u201cGetting to Know the Presidents\u201d also examines the National Archives project \u201cFounders Online,\u201d along with insights gained from the handwriting and unusual longevity of some of America\u2019s first Commanders in Chief.<\/p>\n

With Good Reason<\/em>, a program of the Virginia Foundation for the Humanities, airs weekly on all of Virginia\u2019s public radio stations and on public radio stations in 34 states across the country.
