Last summer\u2019s infamous Charlottesville rally will be the subject of a roundtable discussion in UMW\u2019s Monroe Hall, Room 116, on Thursday, March 22, at 7 p.m.<\/p>\n

UMW to host Religious Freedom conference, with daytime events at the University Center.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n

The session, \u201cReligious Freedom in the Streets: Remembering Charlottesville,\u201d is part of the Religious Freedom in a Fractured America conference, hosted by Mary Washington\u2019s Department of Classics, Philosophy and Religion. The two-day event, held Thursday and Friday, also will include student essay presentations and panel discussions led by thought leaders from across the region and beyond.<\/p>\n

\u201cIn the aftermath of the last Presidential election and the ensuing political turmoil, religious minorities are alarmed by the rate of attacks on religious liberties in America,\u201d said UMW Professor Mehdi Aminrazavi. \u201cWe like to remind the powers that be of the American tradition of tolerance.\u201d<\/p>\n

Aminrazavi will moderate the roundtable event, featuring celebrated religious figures. Panel\u00a0discussions, co-organized by UMW Professor Jennifer Barry, will revolve around the topics of religious violence, anti-intellectualism and religious freedom, and persecution complex. UMW\u2019s Aminrazavi and Mary Beth Mathews; Women in Higher Education editor<\/em> Kelly J. Baker; the University of Iowa\u2019s Sarah Bond; Earlham College\u2019s Emily Filler; Rutgers\u2019 Diane Fruchtman; the Religious Freedom Center of the Newseum Institute\u2019s Benjamin Marcus; Lehigh University\u2019s Monica Miller; and George Mason University\u2019s Matthew Scherer will lead the sessions.<\/p>\n

Religious Freedom in a Fractured America will take place at UMW on March 22 and 23.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n

Daytime conference activities \u2013 including Friday\u2019s 1:30 p.m. student presentation of winning essays based on religious freedom and how it has changed since the last presidential election \u2013 will take place in the University Center\u2019s Colonnade Room.<\/p>\n

UMW student interns Es\u00a0Hethcox, John Guidon and Julia Mitchell helped organize the conference, also sponsored by the Women\u2019s and Gender Studies, Political Science and International Affairs, and History and American Studies departments; Leidecker Center for Asian Studies; and University of Virginia’s Center for the Study of Religion.<\/p>\n
