UMW Associate Professor of Biology Deb O\u2019Dell will be featured on \u201cDo Cell Phones Cause Cancer?\u201d set to begin airing Saturday, Aug. 18, on the\u00a0With Good Reason<\/em>\u00a0public radio show. The program, broadcast in Fredericksburg on Radio IQ 88.3 Digital<\/a>\u00a0at 2 p.m. Sundays, explores O\u2019Dell\u2019s research on the possible carcinogenic effects of one of America\u2019s favorite gadgets.<\/p>\n

UMW Associate Professor of Biology Deb O’Dell will share her research on the link between cell phones and cancer on the With Good Reason public radio show.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n

Her results \u2013 she found that a single 25-minute exposure can significantly alter the\u00a0activity\u00a0of genes for up to 48 hours \u2013 \u201csurprised and alarmed\u201d her.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou don\u2019t use your cell phone once every two days,\u201d O\u2019Dell told With Good Reason\u00a0<\/em>host Sarah McConnell, who said she was \u201camazed\u201d by the research. \u201cWhat I\u2019m afraid of [is] that these changes are not being permitted to go back to their original state \u2026 but rather, by continually activating them, we\u2019re causing them to change persistently and that could then lead to changes in how cells reproduce themselves leading then, maybe, to tumors.\u201d<\/p>\n

Questions surrounding the safety of cell phones and the effects of the radiation they emit have long loomed large. O\u2019Dell has spent years \u2013 and involved several UMW students \u2013 researching this phenomenon. Her studies meant culturing cells, dividing them into groups and placing them on a human-head model made from bone, meat and chicken skin. She then placed a cell phone on one side of the model and the cultured cells on the other, before extracting molecules and analyzing the results.<\/p>\n

An expert on the structure and function of the nervous system, magnetic orientation in animals and developmental neurobiology, O\u2019Dell appeared previously on With Good Reason<\/em>in 2014, when she shared her research on bees\u2019 use of magnetic fields. The results of those studies suggested that bees living near cell phone towers may become disoriented and produce less honey.<\/p>\n

A member of the Society for Neuroscience, O\u2019Dell earned a bachelor\u2019s degree from Pennsylvania\u2019s Ursinus College and a Ph.D. in cell and developmental biology from the State University of New York at Stony Brook.<\/p>\n

With Good Reason<\/em>\u2019s \u201cDo Cell Phones Cause Cancer?\u201d also features faculty experts from other universities speaking about breakthroughs in oncological treatments for melanoma, and blood and colon cancers. The episode will run through Friday, Aug.24, on various stations throughout the week<\/a>.
