The Bachelor\u00a0<\/em>filmed its 23rd season in exotic locales like Thailand, Singapore and Vietnam. But directors of the hit ABC reality series deemed UMW\u2019s Brompton, where part of next week\u2019s show was shot, one of the season\u2019s most beautiful sites.<\/p>\n

Captured last October in a cloud of secrecy, the annual \u201chometowns\u201d episode brought Fredericksburg native Caelynn Miller-Keyes, one of four finalists chosen by this year\u2019s bachelor, Colton Underwood, back to her old stomping grounds. The visit included downtown shopping, ice cream at Carl\u2019s and a stop at UMW\u2019s historic Brompton, home to President Troy Paino and wife Kelly. The two-hour episode airs Monday, Feb. 25, at 8 p.m.<\/p>\n

The airtime \u201cwas great for Fredericksburg and for the University of Mary Washington,\u201d said Fredericksburg Mayor Mary Katherine Greenlaw, who was approached in the fall by producers. Miller-Keyes \u2013 2018 Miss North Carolina USA, who landed the first runner-up spot in last year\u2019s Miss USA contest \u2013 is the niece of Greenlaw\u2019s sister-in-law. \u201cWe\u2019ve all been under this gag order. It was so much fun!\u201d<\/p>\n

A crew of about 40 converged on the city for some 10 hours of filming in late October, and despite showy touches like the horse-drawn carriage that carried the couple to Carl\u2019s and to Brompton, the activity was kept under wraps. All involved \u2013 City Police, Public Works, Fredericksburg Tourism, Parks and Rec, UMW \u2013 were sworn to secrecy, and the crew was \u201cstealth-bomber quiet,\u201d said UMW Special Assistant to the President for University Events Susan Worrell, who suggested Brompton as a potential backdrop.<\/p>\n

\u201cI couldn\u2019t see them. Trust me, I tried,\u201d said Kelly Paino, who watched from a window of Brompton while Miller-Keyes and Underwood arrived with their entourage. After a practice run to ensure the horses could scale Trench Hill, the crew filmed its way across the lawn of the famous Civil War site, home to the sprawling Brompton Oak, witness to the bloody Battle of Fredericksburg.<\/span><\/p>\n

City officials spent weeks scouting scenic locations like Old Mill Park and sending photos back to The Bachelor<\/em>\u2019s California studio. UMW\u2019s newly revamped Heslep Amphitheatre was suggested, Greenlaw said, \u201cbecause it\u2019s so pretty and it\u2019s just been redone.\u201d That’s when Worrell stepped in. She led a producer, director and writer across campus pointing out eye-pleasing spots like the Jepson Alumni Executive Center, before tossing Brompton into the mix.<\/p>\n

For her contribution, Worrell received a grateful text from a show affiliate the day of filming: \u201cThe director just said this is one of the prettiest locations they have shot all season.\u201d<\/p>\n

Miller-Keyes, aStafford High School graduate who works in broadcast journalism in Charlotte, North Carolina, is smart and sincere, Greenlaw said. The 23-year-old has made ripples since The Bachelor<\/em>began airing in January, colliding with a fellow beauty pageant contestant and being accused of being disingenuous.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe only person who knows if I\u2019m ready for marriage is me, and I am,\u201d she told Underwood, a former football linebacker, last night during their date in Colorado, the state he calls home. \u201cI am here for an engagement. I am here for you.\u201d<\/p>\n

While filming in Singapore, the two had one of the \u201cmost emotional conversations we\u2019ve ever had on the show,\u201d according to The Bachelor <\/em>host Chris Harrison. Miller-Keyes shared with Underwood her experience as a victim of sexual assault as an undergrad at VCU. The incident fuels her beauty pageant platform to improve Title IX policies on college campuses. \u201cIf you\u2019re passionate about something, you really can make a difference,\u201d she said during the 2018 Miss USA contest.<\/p>\n

When the Singapore episode aired, producers reached out to her family, Greenlaw said, and Miller-Keyes’ mother, Jai-Leah Miller Kamenicky of Stafford, said their experience with the show has been \u201cvery positive.\u201d<\/p>\n

With the crew bustling about at Brompton, Kelly Paino turned to her mother\u2019s oatmeal cookie recipe as a way to get a closer look at the action. The homemade treats were a hit, and the group asked for seconds, while Miller-Keyes and Underwood sat for interviews under the trees.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe are proud of our university\u2019s campus. It\u2019s a beautiful treasure of tradition and history,\u201d said Troy Paino, who didn’t get a glimpse of the couple while they were at his home. \u201cWe were happy that Colton and Cayelynn were able to experience it too.\u201d<\/p>\n

As for those irresistible cookies, there\u2019s no cloud of secrecy there. Kelly Paino agreed to share the recipe.<\/p>\n
