It\u2019s 2 a.m., and there\u2019s a police officer sitting on Julie van Ommeren\u2019s gingham-print loveseat. Another stands by his side. But where is Kyle? She hears someone scream, then suddenly realizes the voice is her own.<\/p>\n

UMW alumna Julie van Ommeren had barely begun her coursework toward a bachelor of liberal studies degree when tragedy struck. The experience led her to shape her degree toward the work she plans in suicide prevention.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n

This is a story of how a liberal arts education \u2013 and a custom-made major \u2013 can map to more than a college degree, even when it detours to the darkest of places. Van Ommeren \u201920 was two weeks into a bachelor of liberal studies program at the University of Mary Washington when her 19-year-old son ended his life in the family van. As she grappled with grief, her schoolwork grew even more personal.<\/p>\n

A careful collection of classes and unflagging support from faculty brought meaning to a mother\u2019s worst nightmare and led to a plan to help others. KYVO \u2013 named for her son \u2013 and \u201cDream to Live,\u201d the platform and program born from van Ommeren\u2019s coursework, shift the focus of suicide from death to life. Though they have not been officially endorsed, she shares them \u2013 and her story \u2013 on a website<\/a> she launched this September, National Suicide Prevention Awareness Month, with deaths on the rise, particularly among young people like Kyle.<\/p>\n

She was in her mid-40s when she came to UMW, not to build a career but to learn to be better at the job she already had \u2013 being a mom. \u201cThere is no greater motivating factor than your own kids,\u201d said van Ommeren, who has two children with special needs, including Kyle.<\/p>\n

She\u2019d barely begun work on the \u201cadvocacy and mentoring\u201d degree she\u2019d carved out for herself when she learned of Kyle\u2019s death. She waded through sorrow to finish the year, then took time off to wrestle with demons. She\u2019d been trained in suicide prevention, so how had she missed the signs? She needed answers to find her way forward. And she realized Mary Washington could provide them, so she came back to campus with a laser-sharp focus on a complete UMW experience.<\/p>\n

Each course van Ommeren took at Mary Washington helped shape her vision for KYVO and Dream to Live, a platform and program she introduced on a website launched during National Suicide Prevention Month.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n

\u201cKyle\u2019s death changed everything about my major,\u201d she said. \u201cI couldn\u2019t accept our failure to prevent my son\u2019s suicide \u2013 [nor his death] \u2013 without understanding why it occurred.\u201d<\/p>\n

Rooted in psychology and sociology, her \u201cliberal arts education on steroids\u201d added clarity, she said. It spanned the College of Arts and Sciences, the College of Education and the College of Business, from math and geology to communication and theatre. It dipped into graduate-level learning and involved all manner of special permissions.<\/p>\n

\u201cShe wrung every drop of learning out of her classes,\u201d said her advisor, Professor of Sociology and Center for Community Engagement Director Leslie Martin. \u201cShe was determined to figure out how each course fit into the whole of her planned major.\u201d<\/p>\n

A concept from \u201cJudgment and Decision Making\u201d \u2013 humans are wired to choose the easiest path \u2013 forms the base of her \u201cDream to Live\u201d program, grounded in coping, crisis-recognition and conversation. \u201cHow to Change the World\u201d led to KYVO, a suicide-prevention organization she hopes to make a nonprofit. \u201cPolitical Sociology\u201d and \u201cPublic Sociology\u201d caused on-campus efforts to foster undergraduate success. A film she made with fellow students about her experience with suicide was shared with Talley Center for Psychological Services trainees.<\/p>\n

\u201cJulie has taken her traumatic experiences and challenging moments and focused that energy on trying to make the world a better place for people to live and grow and thrive,\u201d said Director Tevya Zukor.<\/p>\n

Van Ommeren joined the Student Government Association, collaborated with business incubator StartUpUMW<\/a> and planned a public presentation of her capstone project, \u201cWhy We Fail to Prevent Suicide, the Blessings of Tragedies,\u201d which was thwarted by COVID-19. She hopes to publish a book about her life.<\/p>\n

But an assignment for \u201cDeath and Society\u201d \u2013 a course van Ommeren needed permission to take so soon after her son\u2019s death \u2013 may have left the most lasting impression. Kyle joined her for that one. At the front of the room, with the shiny black box that holds his ashes, she told classmates the story of the police who came to her house at 2 a.m., and the heartbreak \u2013 and hope \u2013 that came after.<\/p>\n
