In the meantime, UMW Professor Emeritus of History William B. Kennedy.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The sixth and final lecture will be tomorrow: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.umw.edu\/greatlives\/lecture\/john-f-kennedy-2\/\">John F. Kennedy: \u201cCamelot\u201d and the Question of Style vs. Substance<\/a>. The JFK lecture, as well as the other five \u2013 all approximately one hour \u2013 are available on the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.umw.edu\/greatlives\/\">Great Lives website<\/a>. Crawley<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Now completing his 50th year of teaching at Mary Washington, Crawley has researched, taught about, and developed great familiarity with each of these presidents. \u201cI suppose my favorite is Theodore Roosevelt because of his personality and rambunctious behavior \u00ad\u00ad\u2013 quite atypical of presidents up to his time,\u201d Crawley said. \u201cAlso, it was interesting that, even though he was a member of the very conservative Republican party, he became the leader of the first broad reform movement in America.\u201d The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.c-span.org\/video\/?476307-1\/theodore-roosevelts-life-legacy\">Teddy Roosevelt lecture first aired on C-SPAN<\/a> on Oct. 11.<\/p>\n<p>Any lessons for today? That\u2019s a matter of debate. Check out some scintillating snippets from Crawley\u2019s lecture descriptions.<\/p>\n<p><em>Should we judge historical figures by contemporary standards that are often at great variance from the times in which the biographical subject lived?<\/em> (Thomas Jefferson)<\/p>\n<p><em>[This president] embodied a host of contradictions. <\/em>(Theodore Roosevelt)<\/p>\n<p><em>In truth, [he] was an unlikely candidate for the White House. <\/em>(Woodrow Wilson)<\/p>\n<p><em>The scion of an aristocratic New York family, [he] faced several setbacks on his journey to the White House. <\/em>(Franklin D. Roosevelt)<\/p>\n<p><em>Few people have ever attained the presidency so seemingly ill-equipped for the job. <\/em>(Harry S. Truman)<\/p>\n<p>Tune in tomorrow to hear more about John F. Kennedy, about whom \u2013 according to Crawley \u2013 many say that \u201cthe glitter of \u2018Camelot\u2019&#8221; masked the lack of any real accomplishment.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd yet \u2026 the Kennedy image still shines brightly for many Americans largely because, even though he was certainly no saint in his personal life, and showed significant shortcomings in his political career, he nonetheless had the ability to instill courage and to inspire hope.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.umw.edu\/greatlives\"><em>The Crawley Great Lives Lecture Series<\/em><\/a><em> will feature a full schedule next year, beginning in mid-January and running through mid-March. There will be 18 lectures, all by members of the UMW academic community. The lectures will be delivered online, with the opportunity for audience questions at the end of each.
