Even with strict health guidelines in place, there is still plenty to do at UMW, including this “Halloweens” event. A special calendar and list contain a collection of activities and ideas for staying engaged.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n

The bell tower on Double Drive still chimes twice a day. Campus Walk clamors with students changing classes. Adirondack chairs continue to migrate all over Ball Circle \u2013 except for the space occupied by the white dining tent that went up this spring due to COVID-19.<\/p>\n

In an unprecedented semester of health guidelines, there are plenty of do\u2019s and don\u2019ts. Time-honored Mary Washington traditions are still on track, but they\u2019re looking more digital and distanced these days. In the midst of it all, University of Mary Washington students just want to have fun.<\/p>\n

A calendar of scheduled events<\/a>\u00a0and \u201cThe List<\/a>,\u201d a growing document of brainstormed diversions \u2013 learn a TikTok dance, create a time capsule, grab a free Campus Rec Frisbee \u2013 show what students CAN do on campus.<\/p>\n

\u201cFun is not canceled,\u201d said Student Activities and Engagement Director Sandrine Sutphin, who\u2019s working with other departments to push out ideas to keep students involved, connected and de-stressed. \u201cYou don\u2019t have to sit in your room. There are still lots of things you can do.\u201d<\/p>\n

Here\u2019s a Top 10 list of scheduled events.<\/p>\n

1. Bingos, Karaokes and Game Nights<\/h2>\n

Tonight through Dec. 1. Presented by various groups.<\/h4>\n

Virtual events showcase favorite activities and allow students to display their competitive \u2013 and creative \u2013 sides. See calendar listings for specific events<\/a>.<\/p>\n

2. CIE Family Weekend Panel<\/h2>\n

Oct. 29. Presented by the Center for International Education.<\/h4>\n

\"AnStudents and their families learn what it takes<\/a> to embark on an enriching study abroad experience. The informational event hosted by the Center for International Education will reveal the details and dynamics of studying abroad.<\/p>\n

3. Halloweens 2020: Paint Your Own Pumpkin Contest and Jack-A-Lantern Walk<\/h2>\n

Oct. 30. Presented by Class Council.<\/h4>\n

\"EerilyOne of UMW\u2019s oldest Halloween traditions, \u201cHalloweens\u201d becomes a pumpkin painting contest and an illuminated evening walk<\/a>, with goodie bags and glow sticks<\/a>. (And maybe a surprise appearance by Dean of Students Cedric Rucker dressed in his signature Winnie the Pooh costume with a pandemic twist!)<\/p>\n

4. Shocktober Virtual Haunted House<\/h2>\n

Oct. 31. Presented by the Campus Programming Board.<\/h4>\n

A virtual haunted house tour<\/a>\u00a0creeps through a sprawling manor to reveal to viewers what lies in the darkest corners of their TV and computer screens.<\/p>\n

5. COAR\u2019s 2020 Box Drive<\/h2>\n

Through Nov. 2. Presented by Community Outreach and Resources.<\/h4>\n

\"CommunityBoxes, available for pick-up<\/a>, can be filled with art supplies, outdoor toys, gloves, hats and other such items for the children of low-income families in Fredericksburg. Community Outreach and Resources’ 2020 Box Drive asks students to pick up a box and fill it with small items for the children of low-income families in Fredericksburg.<\/p>\n

6. Downtown Clean-Ups<\/h2>\n

Nov. 7. Presented by Community Outreach and Resources.<\/h4>\n

Two separate trips \u2013 one along William Street<\/a> to the Rappahannock River, and one at the Downtown Greens<\/a> garden and greenspace \u2013 are designed for participants to pick up litter and help with maintenance.<\/p>\n

7. Paint Night on Zoom with SAE<\/h2>\n

Nov. 6. Presented by Student Activities and Engagement.<\/h4>\n

A paint-your-own masterpiece activity<\/a>\u00a0asks students to show off their artistic talents with a step-by-step video showing how to to paint a scene depicting the UMW Bell Tower.<\/p>\n

8. Stuff a Pok\u00e9mon and Emoji Event<\/h2>\n

Nov. 13. Presented by Student Activities and Engagement.<\/h4>\n

A just-for-fun Build-A-Bear style exercise<\/a> for fans of these popular animated characters.<\/p>\n

9. Eagle Resource Closet Volunteer Opportunities<\/h2>\n

Through Nov. 20. Presented by the Center for Community Engagement.<\/h4>\n

\"TheThe closet, a repository of nonperishables and other items aimed at eliminating food insecurity within the UMW community, needs student volunteers<\/a> to organize, collect and inventory supplies.<\/p>\n

10. Virtual Employer Events<\/h2>\n

February and March<\/h4>\n
