For Sarah Repko \u201919, home is where you never feel alone, no matter who\u2019s around. It\u2019s where you have a sense of peace, comfort and community.<\/p>\n

That\u2019s what Repko found at the University of Mary Washington, and that\u2019s what she found nearly 4,000 miles away in Bilbao, Spain. There, she\u2019s earning a master\u2019s degree in international relations and business diplomacy at Universidad de Deusto. And she\u2019s on a fast track for it, thanks to one of several new 4+1 partnerships between UMW and overseas schools. The pathways let students earn master\u2019s degrees in half the time, while soaking up culture outside the U.S.<\/p>\n

The rolling Nervi\u00f3n River. Charming, walkable neighborhoods. The food \u2013 savory pintxo<\/em>, rich tortilla espa\u00f1ola<\/em>. Repko embraced it all, and shortly after arriving in the Spanish port city for her first study abroad experience, she found herself texting Center for International Education (CIE) Director Jose Sainz.<\/p>\n

\u201cDuring the few weeks I\u2019ve been in Bilbao, I\u2019ve been thinking about either returning or staying an extra semester \u2026 \u201d she wrote in winter 2018. \u201cWould it be possible and what would I have to do?\u201d<\/p>\n

Repko is earning a master’s degree at Universidad de Deusto, thanks to one of UMW’s 4+1 international pathway agreements with schools abroad. Mary Washington’s Center for International Education also offers programs in Spain, France, England and Wales, with one in the works in Ireland. <\/div> <\/div>

So, after not one but two semesters abroad, a final few months at Mary Washington and a pandemic that curtailed international travel for more than a year \u2013 while Repko taught Spanish in the U.S. \u2013 she\u2019s back in Bilbao, this time as a graduate student headed for a career overseas.<\/p>\n

\u201cShe was the perfect candidate to take advantage of our 4+1 international pathways,\u201d Sainz said of the programs available in Spain, France, England and Wales, with one in the works in Ireland.<\/p>\n

Repko earned a degree in Spanish from UMW in December 2019. She was scheduled to walk in May of 2020, but due to the pandemic, she couldn’t participate in an official ceremony until this past spring. Repko had taken six years of Spanish in middle and high school in Mechanicsville, Virginia, by the time she enrolled at Mary Washington. She majored in Spanish, completed practicums through the College of Education, did volunteer work on weekends and spent plenty of time in the CIE. \u201cStudy abroad was the big, big thing for me,\u201d she said. \u201cThe longer I was in Bilbao, the more I wanted to stay. I figured it would be better to finish my Spanish education in Spain.\u201d<\/p>\n

Courses in subjects like geopolitics, sustainable business development, and international trade and politics, plus an internship completion requirement \u2013 oh, and on the side, she\u2019s learning the Basque language of Euskera \u2013 leave little opportunity for leisure. But Repko fits it in, making time for long Spanish lunches, dodging raindrops to explore the city and soaking up a landscape she describes as extraordinary.<\/p>\n

All the while, she keeps up with family in the U.S. through phone calls, video chats, pictures and texts \u2013 like the one she sent Sainz three winters ago when she first felt at home in Bilbao.<\/p>\n

\u201cShe\u2019s driven and determined to achieve the goals she\u2019s outlined for herself, and now being in Spain is a true testimony to how she\u2019s pursuing her personal, professional and academic objectives,\u201d Sainz said. \u201cThese programs were created to address the needs of students, like Sarah, who return from study abroad hungry for more international opportunities.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
