Growing up, Kaitlin Kean spent mornings before school in her father\u2019s office, poring over maps and watching him collect data as a land surveyor.<\/p>\n

\u201cThat\u2019s where I first learned about the field and that it was something I wanted to pursue,\u201d said Kean, who now claims her own office where she wields sought-after expertise in geographic information systems, or GIS, for the Environmental Protection Agency.<\/p>\n

Recently named a \u201cRising Star\u201d in support of the EPA\u2019s mission to protect human health, Kean honed her skills in the University of Mary Washington\u2019s geography department, ranked among the top 10 in the U.S. Southeast<\/a>. A bachelor\u2019s degree, paired with a fast-track master\u2019s in geospatial analysis \u2013 both completed at UMW \u2013 plus a pathway program with the EPA, packed a powerful punch. Now, straight out of college, as a program analyst and training lead in the Office of Mission Support, Kean\u2019s work helps the agency protect communities from environmental hazards like lead paint and toxic waste.<\/p>\n

A college-level GIS course she took in high school caught her attention and got the ball rolling. \u201cMy teacher told us this was a growing field,\u201d she said, \u201cand if you stick with it, you\u2019ll have a job.\u201d<\/p>\n

That\u2019s especially true at UMW, said Geography Chair Jackie Gallagher, where many graduates find immediate work, thanks to the robust programs of the department, which College Factual also ranks No. 5 in Virginia<\/a>. An active alumni network lends support to new graduates, and Kean, who hails from Charlottesville, also attributes her success to supportive faculty members like Melina Patterson, Ping Yin and her advisor, Brian Rizzo.<\/p>\n

\u201cI met Kaitlin as a freshman and was fascinated that she knew exactly what she wanted to do,\u201d said Rizzo, who guided her in her pursuit of a GIS certificate and a thesis on climate ecosystem modeling. \u201cShe could be found in the lab all hours of the day and night, working on assignments on Python \u2013 a computer programming language \u2013 and helping others understand the material.\u201d<\/p>\n

As a senior, Kean enrolled in UMW\u2019s accelerated five-year Master of Science in Geospatial Analysis program \u2013 one of only two in Virginia \u2013 which gives students the chance to take master\u2019s level courses that count toward both undergraduate and graduate degrees. \u201cIt\u2019s kind of a double whammy,\u201d Kean said. \u201cI\u2019d recommend it for anyone planning to study GIS.\u201d<\/p>\n

Kean was a starting catcher on UMW’s softball team for most of her college career, until she decided to take on more coursework in pursuit of her master’s degree. <\/div> <\/div> <\/div> <\/div> <\/div>\n

Outside of class, she played starting catcher for UMW Softball and worked the front desk at Fredericksburg\u2019s Fly Fitness. An exercise enthusiast, these days she hikes with friends at nearby state parks and walks her labradoodle around her Old Town Alexandria neighborhood on her lunch break, while working from home.<\/p>\n

Focused on completing a project management certification later this month, Kean said she\u2019s honored to have earned the respect of her EPA colleagues \u2013 and the \u201cRising Star\u201d award she received during a virtual ceremony last month \u2013 so quickly. \u201cAt such a large government agency, it feels good to be recognized.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
