Marguerite Bennett promises to spill as much or as little as a University of Mary Washington crowd wants to hear tomorrow night.<\/p>\n

Based in L.A., comic-book writer Marguerite Bennett ’10 – widely published in DC, Marvel and more – is known for her depiction of female relationships. She will deliver the Women’s History Month keynote speech at UMW tomorrow night.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n

The 2010 grad \u2013 UMW Women\u2019s History Month keynote speaker \u2013 is brimming with girl-power stories in all shapes and sizes, in her career as a comic book writer and in her personal life.<\/p>\n

\u201cI love women, in their infinite forms, their infinite power,\u201d said Bennett, whose New York Times<\/em>-bestselling, GLAAD-nominated work has appeared in DC, Marvel, Aftershock, Dynamite, Archie and more. She\u2019ll dish about her colorful \u2013 yet sometimes stormy \u2013 journey Wednesday at 7 p.m. in the University Center\u2019s Chandler Ballroom.<\/p>\n

Bennett ka-pow\u2019ed and sha-bam\u2019ed her way through a glass ceiling in her writing career, crashing into the notoriously male-dominated comic book industry while still in grad school. Now, with an earned reputation for her particularly genuine portrayal of LGBTQ+ characters, she\u2019s encouraging others to harness their own victories.<\/p>\n

\u201cIf you write stories that tell folks that queer people can live without shame, they just might grow up believing it,\u201d she\u2019s been quoted as saying.<\/p>\n

\"Well-known
Well-known for her work on DC Comics’ ‘Bombshells,’ Bennett learned long ago the secret of synergy between text and art. ‘That old adage about speaking only when what you have to say is more beautiful than silence applies to sloshing your words over a work of art,’ she said. ‘Everything you add should uplift [the artist’s] work.’<\/figcaption><\/figure>Bennett was already on a quest for justice as a student at Mary Washington, where she enrolled for its strong writing program, and was influenced by English professors Gary Richards, Colin Rafferty and Eric Lorentzen.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhat wasn\u2019t I fired up about?\u201d she said. \u201cFrankly, it was much the same as what gets my ruff more than a decade later \u2013 the rights and representation of women, queer people, people of color, and the social and institutional injustices they face.\u201d<\/p>\n

She was working her way through an MFA program at prestigious Sarah Lawrence College when her professor and mentor, celebrated comic book writer Scott Snyder, offered the chance of a lifetime, enlisting her help on 2013\u2019s Batman Annual #2<\/em>.<\/p>\n

And the rest is comic book history.<\/p>\n

Best known for Bombshells<\/em>, Batwoman<\/em>, and her own original series Animosity<\/em> and InSEXts<\/em>, Bennett has written more than a thousand unique stories and sold more than 10 million copies, though she\u2019s long since stopped counting. Still, some parts of her professional journey have mirrored the words she pens on the page \u2013 words she describes as messy, angry and dark.<\/p>\n

In a corporate universe powered by men \u2013 many of whom, to be fair, she claims as dear friends \u2013 she\u2019s faced sexist acts she deems \u201cshameful,\u201d meant to undermine her career. Yet she\u2019s prevailed, declaring her greatest achievement a personal one \u2013 climbing to the other side of an abusive relationship. \u201cIt was like coming back from the dead,\u201d she said. \u201cA miracle.\u201d<\/p>\n

Along the way, her work has become more pushy and purposeful, with an edge and a grit and a grime that she\u2019s proud of. She writes about murder and mayhem, the horrific and hideous, but her comic-book prose are also infused with beauty, power and love.<\/p>\n

The ‘A-Force’ comic book series, written by Bennett and co-author G. Willow Wilson, and illustrated by artist Jorge Molina, features Marvel’s first all-female team of Avengers. <\/div> <\/div> <\/div>
\"The <\/a>
The brainchild of Bennett and artist Ariela Kristantina, who set their story in the Victorian era, InSEXts was created to depict queerness in comics. <\/div> <\/div> <\/div>
\"'Animosity' <\/a>
‘Animosity’ – centered on a young girl and a dog, and exploring what happens when animals gain the intelligence of humans – is another of Bennett’s original creations. Becoming friends with talking animals was just one aspect of writing that appealed to Bennett. ‘It was a way to make daydreams permanent,’ she said, ‘to establish a fantasy or adventure I could drop into, complete and immersive, at any time I chose.’ <\/div> <\/div> <\/div> <\/div> <\/div>\n

Sure, writer\u2019s block creeps in now and then. For that, Bennett heads to the garden to clear her head and create, bleeding her words with the art on the page. It\u2019s a magical mix, one she believes we all can achieve in our own lives.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou can do it,\u201d Bennett said. \u201cThe antiquated bastions and ivory towers are rotten, and none of them are as strong as they pretend to be. You can kick in the walls.\u201d<\/p>\n
