The teens were among more than 70 students representing 12 districts \u2013 from Richmond to North Stafford, and throughout the Northern Neck \u2013 at last weekend\u2019s d\u00e9but Innovation Challenge @Dahlgren, conceived as an annual event. Fredericksburg Christian School took home the top prize \u2013 $3,000, a ginormous trophy and a year\u2019s worth of bragging rights \u2013 in the two-day robotics-style competition aimed at boosting STEM learning.<\/p>\n

\u201cThis is an opportunity to show how important these skills and capabilities are,\u201d University of Mary Washington College of Business Lecturer John Burrow told the competitors at the start of the contest, held at UMW\u2019s Dahlgren Campus. \u201cYour goals are important to the nation, the region and the community.\u201d<\/p>\n

Fifteen teams from 13 public, private and governor\u2019s schools employed a collection of skills \u2013 Python coding, sensor integration, navigation, detection, command and control \u2013 to establish communication with an \u201cEV3\u201d robot on wheels. Their charge was to program the mechanism to maneuver a mat, navigating the \u201csea,\u201d avoiding \u201cland masses\u201d and \u201ccivilian freighters,\u201d and detecting, acquiring and acting on a target.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe\u2019ve always wanted to try something like this,\u201d said retired Air Force Master Sgt. Doug French. He\u2019s a JROTC instructor at Lancaster High School, which took second place, winning $1,500 to invest in their school\u2019s STEM initiatives. \u201cIf you get students interested in programming, who knows?\u201d French said. \u201cThere\u2019s a lot of jobs out there.\u201d<\/p>\n

Microprocessing kits were delivered to participating schools, and mentors from STEM professions were assigned to teams. A host of elected officials, school board members, business leaders and other VIPs were on hand to cheer on the teams.<\/p>\n

\u201cI realized that science was all around me,\u201d Bureau of Safety and Environmental Enforcement Technical Advisor Candi Hudson \u2013 who won the 2021 Women of Color STEM Award \u2013 said as she gave a touching account of her childhood discovery of technological disciplines. \u201cDo not be afraid to seek solutions and make progress. These analytic skills will be our future.\u201d<\/p>\n

Judging assessed presentation, navigation, creativity and more. Bridging Communities Governor\u2019s School in New Kent took third place, earning $500.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt has given me experience I wouldn\u2019t have been able to get otherwise,\u201d said Susan Randall, a student at King George High School and Chesapeake Bay Governor\u2019s School. Her team worked to navigate issues \u2013 turn radius, stopping distance, performance time \u2013 and complete the mission.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe first day was challenging, but we finally started figuring things out,\u201d said Stephen Haug, also part of the King George team, which contemplated making their robot sing \u201cHappy Birthday\u201d to meet the creativity criteria.<\/p>\n

Public and private industries \u2013 UMW; the Naval Surface Warfare Center, Dahlgren Division; MITRE Corporation; and the Fredericksburg Regional Military Affairs Council \u2013 came together to make the event possible. Organizers hope it\u2019s the start of a partnership also focused on engaging college students and small businesses.<\/p>\n
