A physics and Spanish major at the University of Mary Washington, she plans to write her thesis on the topic.<\/p>\n<p>This unique opportunity to explore Spain\u2019s national archives and historical sites \u2013 and many other high-impact learning experiences for students \u2013 were made possible by UMW\u2019s\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/fund.umw.edu\/project\/22077#:~:text=Our%20goal%20is%20to%20create,our%20students%20beyond%20the%20classroom.\">Beyond the Classroom Endowment<\/a>\u00a0(BTC). Established two years ago, the initiative supports student experiential learning, including independent research, internships, travel to academic conferences, and study abroad.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe wanted to create a fund that allows us to direct the money where it is most needed,\u201d said College of Arts and Sciences (CAS) Dean Keith Mellinger. When the cost of student research proposals in fall 2019 totaled twice the budget, he realized \u201cthis was the catalyst to finding other ways to fund these projects.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Gifts to BTC throughout this November, when UMW celebrates undergraduate research, will help unlock a $10,000 gift from 1977 alums Phyllis Quinn and Beth Craig.
