The University of Mary Washington paid tribute last month to a trio of alums who graduated in the Class of 1950 and gave their alma mater generous gifts to name spaces in Seacobeck Hall. Now home to UMW\u2019s College of Education and Office of Disability Resources, the 1930s era building was recently renovated, providing more gathering places for the campus community.<\/p>\n

The Weatherly Wing represents college sweethearts Marceline \u201cMarcy\u201d Weatherly Morris and Elmer \u201cJuney\u201d Morris Jr., now married 72 years. Named in honor of Marcy\u2019s late parents, William Rupert and Lavon Gardner Weatherly, the 150-seat auditorium is already being used for meetings, lectures, recitals and other special events.<\/p>\n

The Morrises, part of a Mary Washington legacy family that spans five generations, were visibly moved as a series of speakers thanked the couple for their lifelong dedication to their alma mater.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou embody so much of what we try to impart onto our students,\u201d President Troy Paino said. \u201cYour generous gifts help our students learn, grow and pursue their interests and passions, just as the two of you did while you were here at Mary Washington.\u201d<\/p>\n

In addition, the University dedicated the Mason Team Room, thanks to an unrestricted gift from the estate of Helen Chiles Mason, who died last year, and her late husband, Judge Leslie Mason Jr.<\/p>\n

A former elementary school teacher and dramatic arts major at Mary Washington, Helen spent her years passing a love of learning along to her students and her four children. In turn, UMW put the funds toward a collaboration space for aspiring educators.<\/p>\n

\u201cEducation was so important to both of them,\u201d said Ben Mason, Helen\u2019s son, who attended the ceremony with his siblings and his own son. \u201cMom liked teamwork and for people to gather together, so we appreciated that you did this for her, for us and for Mary Washington.\u201d<\/p>\n
