The Chandler Ballroom was booming with energy for the University of Mary Washington\u2019s annual Eagle Awards earlier this month.<\/p>\n

Tiny gold stars glittered across the room, lights split the space into colorful slices and tabletop-thumping applause erupted throughout the ceremony. Seniors Aniya Stewart and Miranda Colbert hosted, pouring personality into a YouTube video-like presentation. But the show-stealers were the students, along with a few faculty and staff, recognized for their commitment to community service, citizenship, philanthropy, academic excellence and more.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe are incredibly proud of you,\u201d UMW President Troy Paino told the crowd, including many nominees and more than a dozen soon-to-be winners. \u201cI like to think that those in this room are getting the most out of their Mary Washington experience. But I also can say that we\u2019ve gotten a lot from you and your leadership. I\u2019m so appreciative of what you\u2019ve done for Mary Washington.\u201d<\/p>\n

The event \u2013 presented by the Office of Student Activities and Engagement (SAE), Center for Community Engagement and James Farmer Multicultural Center \u2013 took place on April 13 at UMW\u2019s Cedric Rucker University Center.<\/p>\n

Senior Maya Jenkins walked away with not one but two top prizes \u2013 the James Farmer Defining a Legacy Award and the Grace Mann Launch Award, both of which speak to her enduring quest for social justice. \u201cMaya\u2019s leading word when making change is \u2018mobilization,\u2019 \u201d a nominator wrote of her.<\/p>\n

The James Farmer Defining a Legacy Award \u2013 named for the late civil rights activist and Mary Washington history professor \u2013 goes to a student, or staff or faculty member, who creates a direct-action project, overcomes a substantial obstacle, challenges an oppressive system and spreads their cause. The Grace Mann Launch Award \u2013 named for a UMW leader and activist who died during her junior year \u2013 goes to a graduating senior who is committed to social justice, equality and improving lives through implementing change, and plans a career in that vein.<\/p>\n

Among Jenkins\u2019 many accomplishments at Mary Washington, she served as the University\u2019s NAACP chapter president and helped form the Black UMW alumni group. She has been a Student Alumni Ambassador, TEAL Peer Mentor for Mary Washington\u2019s Center for Prevention and Education, and student representative on the President\u2019s Community Advisory Panel. She\u2019s also a previous winner of the Prince Woodard Emerging Leader Award.<\/p>\n

\u201cFrankly we\u2019d be here all night if I continued to list her accomplishments,\u201d said Dean of Students Melissa Jones, who described Jenkins as a \u201creflective, formidable and thoughtful leader\u201d before presenting her with the Grace Mann Launch Award. \u201cLike Grace, this student lets her principles guide her in everything she does.\u201d<\/p>\n
