Photo by Karen Pearlman.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>\u201cWe create a soup of the fungus,\u201d said Miles, who earned a degree in psychology and elementary education from the University of Mary Washington in 2015, and returned to campus to study conservation biology. \u201cI knew I wouldn\u2019t be able to get this kind of experience anywhere other than Mary Washington.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Working on Jepson Science Center\u2019s third floor, he spent the summer working with <em>beauveria bassiana <\/em>harvested from spotted lantern flies shipped in from Pennsylvania. He injected the fungus into soybeans and measured toxin production as the plants grew. The work, done with guidance from Assistant Professor of Biological Sciences Josephine Antwi, could help create more effective organic pesticides.<\/p>\n<p>The project is one of more than a dozen that unfolded during the University\u2019s 24th annual Summer Science Institute (SSI), focused on biology, chemistry, computer science, Earth and environmental sciences, physics and math. The 10-week event had students and faculty working closely together on research aimed at finding solutions to real-world concerns, like pesticides.<\/p>\n<p>A public symposium, featuring posters and oral presentations, will showcase the results on Wednesday, July 19, from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., at the Hurley Convention Center\u2019s Digital Auditorium. Professor of Mathematics Leo Lee\u2019s students solved equations, wrote algorithms and designed computer programs to make predictions about the course of pandemics like COVID-19.<\/p>\n<p>Assistant Professor of Earth and Environmental Sciences Pamela Grothe took students Jessica Oberlies and Jacob Cantor on a \u201ctrip of a lifetime,\u201d she said. They traveled to Kiritimati\u00a0Island, planning to\u00a0collect\u00a0samples of ancient corals for research on climate change, El Ni\u00f1o patterns\u00a0and coral reef health. The excursion, funded by Grothe\u2019s National Science Foundation Research Opportunity Award, was a collaboration with universities like Brown and Florida State.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe Summer Science Institute provides UMW students equivalent research opportunities usually only found at large research-based universities,\u201d Grothe said. \u201cIt makes them more competitive when applying for graduate schools.\u201d And thanks to a recent <a href=\"https:\/\/www.umw.edu\/news\/2023\/03\/09\/umw-receives-transformational-30-million-gift-for-undergraduate-research-and-scholarships\/\">$30 million gift<\/a> from alumna Irene Piscopo Rodgers \u2013 the largest in the University\u2019s 115-year history \u2013 funding for undergraduate research in STEM fields is expected to grow.<\/p>\n<p>In both the Summer Science Institute and a sister program, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.umw.edu\/news\/2023\/06\/07\/at-umw-summertime-brings-undergraduate-research\/\">Arts, Humanities, and Social Sciences Summer Institute<\/a>, undergraduates work alongside faculty to conduct professional-level research, analyze data and present their findings.
