Summer session at UMW is a great time for students to catch up, get ahead, or take something new.
Each of UMW’s three colleges (Arts and Sciences, Business, and Education) are offering summer 2018 courses. Over 160 courses are on the schedule and over one-quarter of them will be taught in a fully online format.
Most summer classes begin on Monday, May 21. Courses are available in a five-week May/June term (ending June 21), an eight-week term (ending on July 13), and a ten-week term (ending on July 26). The last summer term available is the June/July five-week term, starting on June 25 and ending on July 26.
Registration for summer classes opens on Monday, March 12 and students may register as late as the first week of the term in which the course is offered. Early registration is advised, as some summer courses do fill up quickly and a small number of courses occasionally have to be cancelled if they fail to generate the necessary minimum enrollment to stay on the schedule (7 students). The summer course schedule is available at the UMW Registrar’s web page.
There are many benefits to taking summer courses, including:
- Summer session courses are generally smaller than those offered during the regular academic year, allowing for closer student/faculty interaction.
- Because a student’s typical course load in the summer is less than it is in the regular session, students have more time to concentrate on each course they are taking.
- Students can use the summer to retake a class in which they earned a grade of C- or lower. The student’s grade in the course when it is retaken substitutes for the original grade (a student might replace a grade of D with a B, for instance). This is a great way to bring up a GPA. Be sure to read UMW’s policy on repeating a course.
Details about important dates, tuition, fees, room and board costs, and other summer session policies are available in the 2018 Summer Guide to Registration.
For questions about summer session policies or procedures, contact the Registrar’s Office. For questions about the content or approach of a particular course, it’s best to contact the course instructor.
