{"id":46470,"date":"2021-11-11T11:03:09","date_gmt":"2021-11-11T16:03:09","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.umw.edu\/president\/?page_id=46470"},"modified":"2023-11-28T09:26:03","modified_gmt":"2023-11-28T14:26:03","slug":"space-committee","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/www.umw.edu\/president\/presidential-committees\/space-committee\/","title":{"rendered":"Space Committee"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<section class=\"wp-block-umw-hero alignfull umw-custom-block umw-hero umw-hero--dark-text umw-hero--media-float-right umw-hero--white umw-hero--with-no-media\"><div class=\"umw-hero__inner\"><div class=\"umw-hero__media\"><\/div><div class=\"umw-hero__title\"><div class=\"container\"><div class=\"umw-hero__title__wrapper\"><div class=\"umw-hero__eyebrow\">office of the president<\/div><h1 class=\"umw-hero__title__header\">Space Committee<\/h1><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div>\n<div class=\"wp-block-umw-hero-ctas alignfull\"><div class=\"umw-hero__links\"><div class=\"container\"><div class=\"umw-hero__links__wrapper\">\n\n\n\n<\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div>\n<\/section>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-committee-charge\">Committee Charge<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>A monthly meeting of Cabinet members whose purpose is to provide advice to the President on matters of space utilization at the University.&nbsp; In particular, the committee makes recommendations to the President about the strategic use of space for UMW.&nbsp; Final decisions are made by the President.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-committee-membership\">Committee Membership<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Juliette Landphair, VP for Student Affairs<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Jeffrey McClurken, Chief of Staff &amp; VP of Strategy, Space Committee Convener<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Craig Erwin, VP for Administration and Finance &amp;CFO<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Tim O\u2019Donnell, Provost<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Susan Worrell, Executive Director of Events<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Committee is staffed by Debra Schleef, Associate Provost, as part of IAE\u2019s role in UMW\u2019s room management<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-bringing-matters-of-space-before-the-space-committee\">Bringing Matters of Space Before the Space Committee*<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Requests for spaces should be brought up through supervisors and then eventually up to the Cabinet member for that area, who will bring the request before the full committee.&nbsp; Cabinet members themselves can identify strategic space needs as well to bring before the committee.&nbsp; If appropriate, the committee then makes a recommendation to the President, who has the final say about space issues.&nbsp; Decisions are conveyed to the appropriate Cabinet member to share with the requestors.&nbsp; Note that one space change can often depend on or result in other changes, and so request responses can be delayed as a result of related moves and\/or funding for them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-some-questions-to-answer-that-would-help-the-committee-s-deliberations\">Some Questions to Answer That Would Help the Committee&#8217;s Deliberations<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Why do you need new space? What has changed in your space needs? (e.g., have you outgrown current space, have health\/safety issues with current space, etc.)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>What is the location, size, and make up of your current space? (square feet, number of rooms\/offices\/features)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>In what ways is your function student-facing or administrative?<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>How many square feet do you need, including the number of individual offices\/rooms?<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Are there specific essential requirements for the new space?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-criteria-used\">Criteria Used<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>There are often multiple demands for space and decisions about space cross multiple divisions and units and a variety of factors need to be weighed.&nbsp; The committee considers institutional need, programmatic need, costs (renovation), strategic priorities, health and safety, accessibility, the need to better take advantage of space utilization, and cross-unit needs, among other factors.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Starting in November 2021, the committee will regularly update the Leadership Council (which includes representatives from UFC, USC, and a number of units on campus) on space requests and issues that have come before it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>*To be clear, individual space reservations are handled by the <a href=\"https:\/\/president.umw.edu\/events\/reserving-a-umw-venue\/\">25Live system<\/a> or <a href=\"https:\/\/students.umw.edu\/studentactivities\/room-reservation\/\">Student Activities<\/a>.&nbsp; This committee deals with longer term space allocation.<\/em><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Committee Charge A monthly meeting of Cabinet members whose purpose is to provide advice to the President on matters of space utilization at the University.&nbsp; In particular, the committee makes recommendations to the President about the strategic use of space for UMW.&nbsp; Final decisions are made by the President.
