Cultivating Community, Engagement, Belonging and School Spirit<\/strong><\/h2>

A thriving campus culture is essential to student success and institutional vitality. We will create environments—physical, social, and experiential—where every student finds community, develops identity, and builds lasting connections to UMW. School spirit at Mary Washington will be built through intentional design of spaces, traditions, participation, and shared identity across the student experience.<\/p>

Tradition and Ritual<\/h3>

We will revitalize cherished traditions and develop new ones that create shared memory, celebrate community, and distinguish the UMW experience across generations. By strengthening the rituals that define “Mary Wash,” we connect current students, alumni, faculty, staff, and the Fredericksburg community through shared identity and pride.<\/p>

Athletics and Recreation as Community Catalysts<\/h3>

Athletics and recreation are important contributors to enrollment, student engagement, and institutional identity. As a Division III institution, UMW’s strength lies in broad student participation across varsity athletics, club sports, intramurals, and outdoor recreation initiatives.<\/p>

We will elevate the integrated athletics and recreation experience by enhancing facilities, strengthening traditions connected to athletic and recreational events, and designing inclusive engagement strategies that invite broad participation from across the student body for athletics. Expanding emerging varsity sports—such as women’s flag football and men’s volleyball—will create additional opportunities for student athletes and support enrollment growth.<\/p>

By positioning athletics and recreation as community catalysts rather than isolated events, UMW will build school spirit rooted in participation, connection, and shared pride.<\/p>

Residence Hall Affinity<\/h3>

Where we live drives identity and sense of belonging. Residence halls are student homes, and clusters of halls are like neighborhoods. By adding resources for student engagement along with design elements such as stable membership, symbolic branding, signature hall events, and hall-based competition, we will deepen their role as primary sources of belonging, spirit, and long-term alumni attachment.<\/p>

Together, these design elements elevate residence halls into communities of pride and heritage—making residential neighborhoods central to campus spirit and alumni connection.<\/p>

Cohort Identity and Belonging<\/h3>

Intentional programming for key populations will strengthen the student experience. This includes rethinking the four-year developmental arc by developing programming and initiatives that recognize the unique needs of transfer students, address the often-overlooked second year through sophomore experience, and creates identity, belonging and access for students who live off-campus with an intentional commuter student community.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
