Major in religious studies at UMW, and you\u2019ll study the traditions, texts and beliefs inherent in Buddhism Christianity, Hinduism, Islam, Judaism, and other religions to better understand how religious ideas and practices affect our lives. You\u2019ll work on original research and a senior thesis as you hone skills in critical thinking, writing, and analysis.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-degree-awarded\">Degree Awarded<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Students majoring in religious studies who complete all requirements earn the degree of Bachelor of Arts (B.A.) in philosophy and religious studies.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-areas-of-study\">Areas of Study<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Study traditions, texts, and people to learn the historical and&nbsp;cultural impact of the world\u2019s major religions. This program doesn\u2019t ascribe to any particular belief system. Students work work one-on-one with faculty on research and a senior thesis and are encouraged to explore other disciplines \u2013 such as philosophy and anthropology \u2013 to help identify their special interests.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-career-opportunities\">Career Opportunities<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>As a religious studies major, you will leave UMW with skills in critical thinking, persuasive writing, oral communication, and research. While some religious studies graduates pursue advanced degrees for careers in teaching and research, most develop careers in such diverse fields as public relations, journalism, business, teaching, service organizations, and the arts. The major is excellent preparation for studies in library science, law, social work, and the ministry.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-buttons is-layout-flex wp-block-buttons-is-layout-flex\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-button\"><a class=\"wp-block-button__link wp-element-button\" href=\"https:\/\/www.umw.edu\/careercenter\/tools-resources\/what-can-i-do-with-this-major\/religious-studies\/\">See Career Paths<div class='arrow'><\/div><\/a><\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-internships\">Internships<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Supervised off-campus internships are available to qualified students and are developed in consultation with religious studies faculty.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"umw-accordion-container umw-custom-block\" data-only-one=\"true\">\n<div class=\"umw-collapsible-section umw-custom-block\"><div class=\"accordion__question\" data-js-question=\"true\"><button class=\"accordion__question__trigger\" data-js-trigger=\"true\">Honors<\/button><div class=\"accordion__question__answer\">\n<p>To receive honors in religious studies, you will need at least a 3.5 grade-point average in the major and a grade of A in the capstone course required of all religious studies majors. In that course, you\u2019ll choose a topic for research, then write a 20- to 25-page thesis and present it to your fellow students.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"umw-collapsible-section umw-custom-block\"><div class=\"accordion__question\" data-js-question=\"true\"><button class=\"accordion__question__trigger\" data-js-trigger=\"true\">Requirements<\/button><div class=\"accordion__question__answer\">\n<p>The&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/catalog.umw.edu\/undergraduate\/majors\/religious-studies\/#requirementstext\">religious studies<\/a>&nbsp;requires 30 credits in approved core and elective courses. All religious studies majors must complete a capstone course, in which they\u2019ll write and present a thesis.
