MWC SACS Self-Study
Academic Affairs Committee

Minutes, December 1, 2000

4 P.M.

Present: Azukas, Coleman, Columbus, Cox-Hanley, Hartman, Norwood, Smith, Stevenson

Absent: Blakemore, Hydorn

1. We spent some time clarifying our focus and discussing the kinds of specific issues which might help us better make planning recommendations to the steering committee. We also reviewed some of the enrollment projections for the JMC campus and how they might impact the relationship between the MWC and JMC campuses.

2. We discussed several issues that could affect our recommendations and directed Roy to bring them to the attention of the steering committee for comment and feedback.

  • Visits to other campuses which have dealt with this transition should precede any recommendations we will make, of course. They might also be very helpful in deciding some of the questions we might wish to ask of our own campus sources. Administrative members of the committee were particularly eager to be included in planed visits. They could then better understand the challenges they face.
  • Plans for JMC campus, whether about classes or administrative facilities are logically tied to plans for the physical plant. What are those projections for the next decade? More specificity would mean better planning.
  • Does MWC/JMC intend to invest in distance learning? Plans for physical plant and student numbers could potentially be significantly affected by distance learning.
3. Additional ideas for us to consider as we work on our task include:
  • Deciding how to weight the interests of different constituencies in our planning. Should our work be weighted toward students, faculty, or administrators? For example if economies of staffing conflict with satisfaction with student services, which should be given greater weight?
  • If we plan to ask for student input via questionnaires, students would need considerable background. Only then could they give helpful feedback. (Perhaps students should be polled through focus groups?)
  • The success or failure of new degrees and programs could be significantly affected by the type of oversight they receive. Should it be assigned only to JMC campus or should there always be some input from MWC faculty and staff?
4. We will not meet again formally until the end of January. Roy asks that each member of the committee look over the list of questions provided with this meetingís agenda and the items above. Email any further questions, suggested revisions of existing questions, or requests for information to so they can be compiled for that meeting. Interim summaries may be provided. Roy can also provide an email list for the to nay who wish it.

Adjourned 5:20.
