Academic Affairs Committee
Minutes, February 28, 2001, 4 P.M.

Present: Azukas, Blakemore, Hydorn, Norwood, Smith
Absent: Coleman, Columbus, Cox-Hanley, Hartman, Stevenson
I. Roy reported on the steering committee meeting with our SACS liaison, Jack Allen.
II. Our small numbers and lack of administrative or JMC representation made work on our regular agenda problematic.  Instead we had a more general, informal discussion.  We reached some agreement in this small group on several points.

  • The impact of academic administration reorganization will have little impact on the day-to-day operation of faculty in the fox-holes.  In contrast it would have more impact on students and considerable impact on the daily activities of administrators.
  • In a multi-campus organization, even more than in a single campus university, the quality of electronic communication may well be the deciding factor in the feasibility of single versus multiple locations for records and services.
  • In general services should follow the students they are designed to support, while records can be more effectively centralized.
  • A reasonable final report from this committee would be an annotated organizational chart for the areas we are studying.
  • For our report to be useful we must include not only the final organization we envision but the steps we see in getting there.  Those steps depend heavily on the actual growth of the JMC campus - both physically and in numbers of students.  One way to allow for this as-yet-poorly-predicted growth may be to indicate the order of or priority for moving from the present configuration to a final configuration.
In addition to these points we also agree that gathering information about the experiences of other institutions makes more sense earlier rather than later.
Our last two scheduled meetings are March 23 and April 13, both Fridays.  On the 23rd we will be meeting in the library of the JMC center at 4:30.  On the 13th we will be back in Chandler 109.
Adjourned 5:00
