Minutes
Meeting of the SACS Alternative Self-Study Committee on
Faculty Governance

January 31st, 2001

The meeting began at 4:05. Present: James Goehring, Roy Gratz, John Morello, Wendy Price, Blair Staley, Jo Tyler, and Ana Chichester, Chair.

I. Old Business: Review of analogs

We discussed the fact that some institutions we reviewed had little posted on their web sites regarding faculty issues to be of much help to us. For the immediate future, we crossed out New Hampshire and Beaver/Arcadia from our list of places to research further. We spent some time reviewing the faculty governance structure and statements of jurisdiction and membership from faculty handbooks found for a few other institutions.

Some institutions that seem worthy of study were identified. Among them: Christopher Newport, Georgetown, Johns Hopkins, William and Mary, Dominican University (Illinois), Northern Illinois University, Florida Gulf Coast University, University of Texas at San Antonio.

II. New Business: Research questions to ask of other institutions regarding some of the issues charged to our committee: faculty governance, faculty benefits, rights and responsibilities of faculty, faculty appointments.

1) In the university structure, what are the areas of authority assigned to the faculty? (e.g. mission, standards for promotion and tenure, retention of faculty, budget and planning, curriculum, etc).

2) How does the faculty govern itself? Describe structure for faculty governance.

3) What are the advantages and disadvantages of such structure?

4) Define full-time faculty appointments at your institution (tenure-track vs. multi year).

5) What is the teaching load of full-time undergraduate faculty and of full-time graduate faculty?

6) What are the rights and responsibilities of full-time faculty in the areas of contract negotiation and intellectual property? What are other areas of faculty concern?

The meeting adjourned at 5:20.

Next meeting:: February 28th at 4:00.

This meeting will be held at JMC, room 226.

Respectfully submitted,

        Ana Garcia Chichester
