NEW PROGRAMS COMMITTEE
MINUTES FROM THE NOVEMBER 15, 2000 MEETING
In attendance: Mehdi Aminrazavi, Gail Brooks, Phil Hall,
Pam Hopkins, George Meadows, Brenda Vogel
- Discussion of October 23rd meeting.
- Cleared up how to make decisions about programs (SCHEV
criteria---numbers, duplication)
- "Primarily undergraduate" What does that mean? When
will that change if ever? More philosophic than demographic.
- How sacred is that mission? Character we want to
preserve.
- Expectations of SCHEV and GA: Programs not found
in other graduate programs in the state. Programs at
JMC are work-related, geography-bound.
- Surprised that there were not more questions asked
of the President and other presenters.
- Positive aspect of size: Classes taught by professors,
not GTAs.
- Report from each committee member on assignments.
- - Report from Donald (via e-mail): Focusing on local
demographic information and how it might affect JMC
(because this information is less likely to impact MWC
campus). Gathering census data on the current population
of the region with projections of future growth.
- - Report from Brenda: A listing of programs that
have been mentioned as possibilities (e.g., mass communications,
international study, counseling, Asian studies, historic
properties, OT/PT, human services administration, concentrations
in MBA, distance learning, concentrations in M.Ed.).
- - Report from Pam: Possible analogues
Trinity School kept "pure" at Duke
Farleigh DickinsonBecker College like MWC
Look at Albany's organization
- - Report from Mehdi: Looked primarily at Virginia
schools, especially "centers."

are free standing.
Good modelEast Asian Center at U.Va.
- - Report from Gail: Future trends
What's the job market going to look like in the next
couple of years?
(U.S. Dept. of LaborOccupational Outlook, 1998-2008)
Certifications will be importantcertificate
and major at same time.
Education more competency-based as apposed to research-based.
Discussion by committee on defining education by
what it means to do job better. (Avoid either/or.
Academics/job skills both important.)
Committee should look at delivery of programs, emerging
paradigm.
Phil: SCHEV is working on master plan for higher
education. Will look at new programs in this context
and demographics. (Phil serves on the committee.)
- - Report by George Meadows: Fall 2000 survey of department
chairs/program directors
Music Dept. considering masters in music education.
Dept. of Sociology and Anthropology is seeking new
major in Anthropology.
Graduate teacher ed programs at JMCSpecial ed
(fall 2001). Others to be considered: administration,
advanced technology, technology education, reading
specialist, school counselor. (Long-term planning:
Should there be doctoral programs?)
Dept. of Ed at MWC: Center for Assistive Technology.
Also, continue collaborative projects (DaVinci Project,
VCEPT grant), and strengthen integration of technology
and special education in program.
- Steven Greenlaw's request:
Do we have any changes to recommend? Does the mission
need to be broadened? Probably not.
- Development of research questions. Brenda offered a
draft of questions. Committee members should add, delete,
modify before December 5th meeting.
- Task for next meeting (December 5th, 4 p.m.,
JMC conference room): Final draft of research questions.
- Adjournment (after Brenda praised the committee for
individual contributions, hard work, and the collegial
and productive tone that was set).
