SACS-COC Self-Study Steering Committee Meeting: March 12, 2001
1) New Web-site: We have moved the web-site out of the Psychology Departments folder into our own SACS folder.  Memory problems were beginning to occur as the web-site grew.  Up dating of committee minutes and research questions has been delay due to the need to revise all the links.  The new URL is http://departments.umw.edu/sacs/www/index.html.
2) Budget:  We discussed the budget Larry has submitted and the assumptions it is based on.  The budget does imply that we'll need to do the research ourselves and a research design team was proposed.  We will want to make use of existing archival data and as many recent studies as we can uncover.
3) Site Visits:
  • At Phil Hall and Jack Allen's suggestion, in April, Larry will be shadowing a SACS visiting team at Columbia College.
  • Selecting campuses we want to use as analogs will be one of our next major challenges.  Roy Smith noted that for the purposes of his committee, we needed to visit schools that had successfully made the transition to dual campuses and offer programs for "non-traditional" students.  Meta offered the use of JMC's teleconference facilities as one way to reduce travel expenses.
4) Rescheduling the next meeting: The assembled members agreed to move the next meeting to April 24th at 4:00 PM at the James Monroe Center.
5) Other Planning efforts:  Given the recent announcement about a company being hired to develop a 10 year Master Plan, everyone agreed that we needed to know what other efforts are underway.  Specifically, as a foundation for our exploring the changes we want to recommend, we need:
1) to have a good idea of what is already planned for the near future,
2) to know what is plausible, as well as, what is possible for the two campuses within the ten year scope of our study
† Therefore, the agenda for the next meeting will be briefings by Rick Hurley and Meta Braymer regarding the plans that currently exist for the two campus, e.g. new building or major investments in new or existing programs.
6) Action items:  Larry is to talk to Rick Hurley to see if he is available and willing to present. at the April 23rd meeting.  Anyone who can make it is encouraged to attend the session being planned by the engineering group that has been hired to create a 10 year construction plan for MWC.  The announcement hasn't been sent out yet, but Ron Singleton thought the session was scheduled for March 21st.
Addendum:
  • Rick Hurley has agreed to present at our next meeting.
  • The meeting with the engineering group will not be on March 21st, but instead will be scheduled in April.
