MWC SACS University Relations and Development Committee
Minutes of the Second (First Substantive) Meeting

November 13, 2000

James Monroe Center, Conference Room

4:00 PM

Present: Joseph Nicholas (chair), Rita Stone, George Van Sant, Liane Houghtalin, Tara Corigall, Margaret Mock, Lea Ziobro, Mark Safferstone, Ron Singleton (ex officio), Jeff Rountree, Cindy Snyder

Discussion began with a brief account of the Oct. 23 joint meeting for the benefit of committee members who were unable to attend that meeting.

JN reviewed the agenda, noting that today's meeting would focus on the generation of research questions, and we would use Larry Penwell's email (Some rather unrefined research questions) of 11/6/00 as our template.

We discussed the need to research other schools that include programs for older, non-traditional students as an analog to our JMC. Two that were mentioned were University of Richmond's Richmond College and Johns Hopkins University.

We outlined the scope of the committee's charge. George summarized it as Marketing, Alumni, and Development (MAD), and that's pretty accurate.

JN noted that we have two primary issues to look at early on in our deliberations: 1) What will the Alumni Association look like under the new university structure, and 2) what will be the characteristics of our alumni 10 -13 yrs from now?

We discussed a need to know what our current definition of alumni is and how JMC graduates fit in. MS asked how students completing various programs will be treated. For example, there are certificate programs that are very different from, and more abbreviated than, the BPS or masters programs.

The committee took up the question of marketing and media relations. How will this be handled under the new structure? How is it handled now? RS and others noted that the Office of Admissions does most of our marketing at MWC, but MS pointed out that JMC has a large part of its marketing effort directed toward local businesses. Marketing under the new structure would therefore be targeted toward: prospective MWC and JMC students, and local businesses in the area who stand to benefit from the university's grads. We talked about how larger institutions do their marketing, and it was noted that at least some have marketing departments that handle everything.

The meeting concluded with a request to all of the committee's members to generate a list of research questions, using Larry's 11/6/00 letter as a starting point. Questions should be emailed to Joe Nicholas by Friday, December 8 so that a list could be compiled by Joe for the next meeting. The next meeting is scheduled for 4 PM Monday, December 11, 2000 at Trench Hill.

The meeting adjourned at 5:30 PM.
