Minutes of the University Relations
and Development Committee
March 26, 2001, 4:00 PM
|
Present: Liane Houghtalin, Margaret
Mock, Joseph Nicholas (chair), Jeff Rountree, Ron
Singleton (ex officio), Cindy Snyder,
Rita Stone, George Van Sant |
Ron reported on phone calls made to PR directors
of COPLAC institutions to find which have adult and
continuing education divisions that are separate from
the four-year residential liberal arts program.
The results suggest that four out of fifteen schools
(MWC excluded) have something like this structure
and may serve as viable sources to answer some of
our specific questions. They are:
- Ramapo State College in New Jersey
- Evergreen State University, Washington
- College of Charleston in South Carolina
- Henderson State University in Arkansas
|
Jeff will contact the Development offices of these
institutions to find out how schools with a scale
similar to MWC/JMC deal with multiple programs with
regard to fundraising. Cindy will do the same
with the alumni offices of these institutions with
regard to serving diverse alumni constituencies. |
George reported on his overview of the Mehfoud Report.
He noted that the following categories may provide
this committee with answers to some of our questions:
- factors contributing to pride in the
institution
- marketing, especially to the community
- demographic information about alumni
- responses from alumni on a number of
issues
|
Much of the discussion for the remainder of the
meeting focused on the question of requirements for
alumni status. The consensus was that no changes
appear to be needed in the definition (articulated
below) at this time, but that there should be some
indicator in the alumni database that will distinguish
between MWC alumni and JMC alumni. Cindy will
research this topic at other colleges and will provide
recommendations to the committee. |
It was agreed that MWC and JMC degree recipients
will be automatically added to the instution's alumni
database upon successful completion of the degree,
and that degree-seeking students within each program
area may request alumni status at the institution
(via the Alumni Relations Office) upon the successful
completion of 24 or more credit hours of study at
the institution. |
The structure and activities of the alumni programs
serving graduates of the James Monroe Center are expected
to be different from those of the present Alumni Association.
The leaders of specific graduate, undergraduate and
certificate programs at the James Monroe Center will
play an intergral role, working with the Alumni Relations
Office, in maintaining contact with program graduates
and sponsoring events/activities as needed. |
Joe noted that our final meeting of the semester
would be the April meeting. During our next
meeting, therefore, we would need to begin focusing
on developing a list of specific questions that will
answer questions of changes to Alumni Relations/Development/Marketing
programs with a move to university status. Our
list of questions should be reasonably complete by
next September. |
The next meeting is scheduled for 4 PM Monday,
April 30, 2001 at Trench Hill
The meeting adjourned at 5:00 PM. |
