How can we define our mission(s) to maximize our flexibility, while simultaneously creating adequate definition, to sustain the growth and development of the institution as a whole and in its constituent parts?
What "conditions" in the Mission & Image CommitteeÌs areas of responsibility are critical for a move to University status to be successful?   How can we assure that those conditions are optimized? E.g. clear missions & firewalls between the two campuses
II. Balance distinctiveness and economies of scale
What do you see as the distinctive features which define MWC (i.e. the Fredericksburg Campus)?
What do you see as the threats to the distinctive features of MWC?  What should be done to defeat/deflect those threats, and to protect/maintain the distinctive features? E.g. against future intervention by the BOV, SCHEV, or university administration?
How can we enhance the distinctive features of MWC?  How can we make MWC more distinctive?
What do you see as the distinctive features which define JMC (i.e. the Stafford Campus)?
What do you see as the threats to the distinctive features of JMC?  What should be done to defeat/deflect those threats, and to protect/maintain the distinctive features?
How can we enhance the distinctive features of JMC?  How can we make JMC more distinctive?
Where will linkages between MWC and JMC enhance the two programs?  Where can linkages be tolerated?  Where can linkages not be tolerated between the two programs?
Where do the distinctions between MWC and JMC need to be maintained to protect their respective missions and images?
III. Image
To what extent does it make sense to separate the identities of the two schools?  When is it preferable to link them?  Do we have different stakeholders?  Should we have?
How do we maintain and develop our reputation for excellence in all our academic endeavors?
How do you see the expectations of faculty/staff/students changing with university status?
What are other institutions which have grown laterally, rather than vertically, and within which exist Ïsemi-autonomousÓ units, which might serve as models for our new university?  Analog [This question is not unique to our committee.]
What has been the experience of other institutions, similar to Mary Washington, who have moved to Ïuniversity statusÓ (whether laterally or vertically) in recent years?  Analog
How did the missions and images of other schools change after they moved to university status?  What were the positive/negative changes?  What was unexpected? Analog
What did other schools do with respect to separate images, publications, commencements, etc.?  Analog
What are (smallish) universities which originated from liberal arts colleges, and which colleges still maintain a strong identity as a liberal arts institution? E.g. Harpur College/Binghamton University (1965) Analog
How does Harpur College maintain such a strong sense of identity within the larger university? Analog
How did the university build on the strong foundation provided by Harper? Analog
