New Programs Committee General Questions

For students:

  • What method of course delivery do you find most useful to you?  (traditional lecture, online, distance learning, combination, etc.)
  • Would you enroll in courses (or entire degree programs) that were totally on-line (no class meetings at all)?
  • What colleges/universities have you considered attending?
  • If you are attending another institution, why did you choose that college/university?  location? schedule? programs offered?
  • Are you considering changing careers?  Do you need education/training to make that career change?  If so, what education/training.

For Administrators:

  • What impact would a new degree program at MWC have on your department?
  • What impact would a new degree program at JMC have on your department?
  • What type of administrative structure do you think is best suited for connecting JMC and MWC when university status is achieved (e.g., President-Provost-MWC Dean/JMC Dean)?
  • What type of coordinating structure do you think is best suited for connecting JMC and MWC when university status is achieved (e.g., a university council for strategic issues/planning only and not governance)?

For Prospective Students:

  • Think about where you hope to be in your career in the next few years.
              - What are your career goals?
              - What kind of courses/training programs might best help you get there?
              - Once you've achieved your goal, what kind of education/training might best help you do well
                 in that position?
              - What kind of education/training would help you move beyond that goal?
              - If you are thinking of a career change within the next few years, what kind of education/training
would help you make that change?
  • For each of the questions above, what kind of technology should be used by JMC in your education/training and what kind of technology should you be learning how to use during the course of this education/training?
  • As you consider further education/training programs, what would make you choose JMC as opposed to Strayer University or some other career-oriented training center?
  • How much distance learning, as opposed to direct classroom time, should there be in the training/education program in which you've enrolled?
  • Would you enroll in courses (or entire degree programs) that were totally on-line (no class meetings at all)?

For analog schools:

  • What type of administrative and coordinating structures exist between graduate/undergraduate programs or colleges in the university?  How well do these work?
  • Do you offer any distance learning degrees? If so, what are they? How is the material delivered? (web, CD, videoconferencing, etc). What type of enrollment and retention do these programs have?
  • Do you offer any distance learning courses? If so, please give examples. How is the material delivered? (web, CD, videoconferencing, etc). What is the typical enrollment for theses types of course?
  • Do you offer any course that use a mixture of traditional classroom learning and distance learning? If so, please give examples. What percentage of the course is taught in the classroom? How is the distance material delivered? (web, CD, videoconferencing, etc).
  • Do you offer any programs or courses in an accelerated schedule? If so, what type of accelerated schedule (weekend courses, 5 week courses, 7 week courses, etc)?
  • If you offer different methods of delivery, what method(s) seem to be the most popular among students: traditional classroom (15 week), accelerated, mixture of on-line and classroom or totally on-line?
  • What type of support structure do you have in place for your distance-learning curriculum?  For example, do you use a commercial course management package such as Blackboard? If so, does your school host the software? If so, what type of night and weekend support do you have? Do you have instructional design faculty and/or staff to assist in the development of this material? If not, who develops the on-line curriculum?
For All Faculty:

  • What technology do you now use in your courses?
  • What technology are you willing to incorporate into your courses?
  • What type of administrative structure do you think is best suited for connecting JMC and MWC when university status is achieved?
                For example:
                    President-MWC Dean/JMC Dean (current structure)?
                    President-Provost-MWC Dean/JMC Dean?
                    Other (explain)?

  • What type of coordinating structure do you think is best suited for connecting JMC and MWC when university status is achieved?
                For example:
University Council (not a governance body; strategic issues/planning only)?
                    Other (explain)?

JMC Faculty only:  (Would it be useful to ask these of all faculty?)
