University Relations and Development Committee

Research Questions

November 15, 2001

Following is the first draft of research questions or statements as developed by the committee during the past year.  These will serve to target our efforts and keep us focused on our original charge, i.e.:

"In collaboration with the SACS steering committee and with input from all appropriate constituencies, this committee's task is to research, to analyze, and to make prioritized recommendations regarding the image and successful marketing of Mary Washington College and the James Monroe Center, institutional relations with alumni and the broader community, and the continuation and advancement of private funding for operations, initiatives, and scholarships."

The questions and statements below are broad in scope, and will necessarily need some elaboration, probably by way of more specific questions that can and should be asked within each category.  Committee members are asked to suggest further, more specific questions that would guide our research within the scope of our charge.  To that end, what follows is a structure for our research efforts of December and January, but many of the finer points still need to be articulated and considered.

1. What should be the structure and function of the Alumni Relations program of the university?

  • The assumption is that there will be one Alumni Relations Office with divisions to serve the major constituencies, e. g. MWC, JMC.
  • Creation or continuation of special programs to serve the different alumni constituencies within the university's Alumni Association.
  • What are the programs currently being offered and to what constituency groups?
  • What are the new alumni constituencies and what are their demographic and geographical characteristics?
  • What new alumni programs might we offer to the new constituency groups?
2. What constitutes an alumnus/alumna of the university?
  • The committee decided that we would use the national definition of qualification.  This was articulated in the UR&D committee minutes of Feb. 26, 2001:  "Any graduate of the [university's] undergraduate or graduate programs or any student who has successfully completed a minimum of 24 credit hours as an undergraduate student or 18 hours as a graduate student at [XYZ University] . . ."
  • Certificate program graduates would not be automatically given alumni status, but such status may be granted upon request.
3. What should be the structure and function of the Development program of the university?
  • One office for coordination of effort within the university (?)
  • What are the current targets and goals of our development programs?
  • How will these change, or what new groups will be targeted within the next 10 years?  Can we predict what new goals should be set in the area of development within this period?

4. How should the area of image development and marketing be addressed by the university?

  • The assumption is that there will be one News and Information Office that will serve the entire university.
  • A further assumption is that there will be a university Publications Office that will coordinate use of graphic design for the entire institution.
  • Currently, JMC admissions are operated through the MWC Admissions Office.  Will this change with the growth of JMC?  Specifically, how will marketing by Admissions be done for the university?  Will there be one Office of Admissions for the Uuniversity and separate divisions for each college or program?
