Re: COC-SACS Self-Study Update

The Commission On Colleges of the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools (COC-SACS) Reaffirmation Self-Study is progressing on schedule. As you’ll recall this effort is being conducted in two pieces. First, Roy Weinstock has been working closely with many members of the administration and faculty to compile the documentation necessary to demonstrate to a visiting COC-SACS team that we are indeed in compliance with the myriad of criteria required for accreditation. Second, the alternative side of the self-study has involved eight committees, --roughly 80 faculty, staff, administrators, students, alumni, BOV members, and community leaders – in assessing the changes we will need to make as we move to University status.

This past year we have conducted a number of surveys, focus groups, and interviews with faculty, administrators, alumni, current and prospective students, local business and community leaders, and faculty and administrators from select analog schools. Working from this data, the self-study committees developed a number of recommendations regarding useful changes in their assigned areas.

This summer the steering committee has been reviewing the sub-committee reports and will be presenting its own set of recommendations based upon, and hopefully integrating, their work. Before school resumes in August, Terry Kennedy and I will compile the reports, do some editing, and present the entire report back to the committees for a final edit. That report will subsequently be sent to the Board of Visitors, and then on to the COC-SACS Consultation Team assigned to visit us in March of 2003.

Current drafts of the reports from the all the committees are available on the web at http://www.umw.edu/archive_mwc/sacs_private/index.shtm/reports/. I invite you to review them and give us your comments before we finalize the report. Personally, I am very impressed with the work of the committees and want to thank everyone who participated!
