Gari Melchers Home and Studio at Belmont will host “First Saturday in the Garden: A Walk on the Wild Side” on Saturday, August 2. Saturday’s activities, except tours of the historic house and studio, are free of charge and will be held rain or shine from 9 a.m. to noon. Guided tours of the historic house and studio are available from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. General admission prices of $10 for adults and $5 for students ages 6 and older apply.

Belmont’s butterfly garden, which is planted and cared for by the Master Gardeners Association of the Central Rappahannock Region, is in full bloom. Association volunteers will provide information from 9 a.m. to noon on creating and maintaining a garden that attracts and keeps butterflies. Representatives of the Virginia Cooperative Extension also will be available during this time to answer all your gardening questions.

Master Naturalists and staff will lead tours through Belmont’s meadows and woodlands from 9 to 11 a.m. The trails cover steep and rough terrain and may be muddy at times, so sturdy footwear is recommended.

At 11:30 a.m. in the Pavilion, Beate Jensen, grounds preservation supervisor, will give an illustrated talk on how to create and maintain a native grassland meadow and how to deal with invasive woodland species.

“First Saturdays in the Garden” is a monthly horticultural program spotlighting private and historic gardens in the Fredericksburg area. It is organized by local historic sites and their gardeners in conjunction with area Master Gardeners and the Stafford County Virginia Cooperative Extension Office.

Washington is both a Virginia Historic Landmark and a National Historic Landmark. Located at 224 Washington St. in Falmouth, Va., a quarter mile west of the intersection of U.S. 1 and U.S. 17, it is open daily with an admission charge. The museum also serves as the official Stafford County Visitor Center.
