U.S. News Ranks UMW Seventh Among Top Southern Universities
August 22, 2008U.S. News & World Report has ranked the University of Mary Washington’s undergraduate program seventh among southern institutions in the “Universities - Master’s” category in its 2009 edition of America’s Best Colleges.
University of Mary Washington also is listed as third among public institutions in the same group. Last year, UMW was listed as ninth overall and the fourth public master’s university in the South.
“I am extremely proud to see the University of Mary Washington recognized as one of the nation’s best universities,” said UMW President Judy G. Hample. “Our consistently high rankings in this and other publications exemplify the quality academic programs here at the university.”
The “Universities - Master’s” category includes institutions that provide a full range of undergraduate and master’s programs but few, if any, doctoral programs. Of the 572 universities ranked nationally in this category, 118 are classified as being in the South.
In recent years, the University of Mary Washington has seen its academic reputation gain national attention in selective guidebooks. Recently, Forbes.com online news magazine listed UMW as the 13th best public college in its inaugural list of “America’s Best Colleges.” Other publications recognizing UMW among the nation’s best include Kiplinger’s Personal Finance magazine, The Fiske Guide to Colleges, The Princeton Review, Peterson’s Competitive Colleges and Barron’s Profiles of American Colleges.
