Gari Melchers Home and Studio to Host Trip to Savannah
August 6, 2009Gari Melchers Home and Studio will host a four-day excursion to Savannah from Friday, November 6 through Monday, November 9. Participants will have a rare opportunity to tour “Dutch Utopia: American Artists in Holland, 1880-1914,” a special exhibit at the Telfair Museum of Art. This is the first major exhibition to explore the phenomenon of American artists working in Holland at the turn of the 20th century. “Dutch Utopia” can be viewed only in the American cities of Savannah, Cincinnati and Grand Rapids.
Several of Gari Melchers’ paintings will be featured, including “In Holland,” as well as paintings by fellow art colonist George Hitchcock. Participants also will be able to explore the historic district of Savannah, including River Street and City Market.
The cost for members of Friends of Belmont is $600 per person, double occupancy, which includes bus transportation, accommodations, some meals, admission and tour fees. The nonmember price is $650. Gari Melchers Home and Studio is a 28-acre estate and former residence of the artist Gari Melchers and his wife Corinne. The property, which is operated by the University of Mary Washington, is both a Virginia Historic Landmark and a National Historic Landmark. Located at 224 Washington St. in Falmouth, Va., a quarter mile west of the intersection of U.S. 1 and U.S. 17, it is open daily with an admission charge. The museum also serves as the official Stafford County Visitor Center.
