Economist to Moderate Fredericksburg Forum


Economist Judy Shelton will serve as moderator for the October 20 Fredericksburg Forum featuring economist and humorist Ben Stein.

Economist Judy Shelton will serve as the moderator for the Fredericksburg Forum on Tuesday, October 20. The program, featuring economist and humorist Ben Stein, will be held at 8 p.m. in George Washington Hall, Dodd Auditorium. Tickets are required.

Shelton, who specializes in global finance and monetary issues, has given expert testimony before the Joint Economic, Senate Banking, Senate Foreign Relations, House Banking and House Foreign Affairs committees. She also is a noted author of works that include “The Coming Soviet Crash” and “Money Meltdown” and her international economics articles have been published by The New York Times, The Washington Post, Financial Times, Nihon Keizai Shimbun and El Economista.

Shelton is a former senior research fellow at the Hoover Institution at Stanford University and professor of international finance at DUXX graduate business school in Monterrey, Mexico. She has been a staff economist for the National Commission on Economic Growth and Tax Reform and a member of the board of directors for the National Endowment of Democracy, Hilton Hotels and Atlantic Coast Airlines.

Ben Stein has enjoyed a versatile career as a columnist, television and movie actor, author, lawyer and university lecturer. Known as one of the funniest economists and among the most economically insightful humorists, Stein provides a unique perspective on the economic crisis, how it occurred and how to survive it.

He has served as an economist at the Department of Commerce; a poverty lawyer in the field of trade regulation at the Federal Trade Commission; a lecturer at American University, the University of California and Pepperdine University; and a speech writer and economic advisor for Presidents Richard Nixon and Gerald Ford. He is author of more than 30 books.

The 2009-2010 Forum season will culminate on Tuesday, March 23, with broadcast journalist Judy Woodruff who has covered politics and other news for more than three decades at the major television networks CNN, NBC and PBS. She is senior correspondent for PBS’ “News Hour with Jim Lehrer” and was editor of the show’s 2008 election coverage.
