July 19, 2007

Fredericksburg, Va. – Gari Melchers Home and Studio, in conjunction with the Fredericksburg Area Council of Garden Clubs and the First Saturdays in the Garden program, will host “Arts and Flowers,” an exhibit featuring a selection of 10 floral interpretations of paintings in the museum collection, on Saturday, August 4. Member clubs of the Fredericksburg Council of Garden Clubs will design the arrangements.

All of Saturday’s activities, except tours of the house, are free of charge and will be held rain or shine from 9 a.m. to noon. Guided tours of the historic house are available from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.; regular general admission prices apply.

Belmont’s butterfly garden, which is planted and cared for by the Master Gardeners Association of the Central Rappahannock Region, is in full bloom. Association volunteers will provide information on creating and maintaining a garden that attracts and keeps butterflies.

Representatives from the Virginia Cooperative Extension will conduct a plant clinic where they will answer any garden-related questions. This year there will also be information on how to become a Virginia Master Naturalist. This program has a statewide corps of volunteers providing education, outreach, and service dedicated to the beneficial management of natural resources and natural areas within their communities.

First Saturdays in the Garden isa monthly horticultural program spotlighting private and historic gardens in the Fredericksburg area. It is organized by local historic sites and their gardeners in conjunction with area Master Gardeners and the Stafford County Virginia Cooperative Extensive Office.
