Archeological Work Begins at Gari Melchers Home and Studio
December 18, 2007
Archeological investigation has begun at Gari Melchers Home and Studio at Belmont in preparation for planned stabilization work on the 19th-century Caretaker’s Cottage. The work is being conducted by ECS Mid-Atlantic of Fredericksburg under contract with the University of Mary Washington.
Located across Washington Street from the main house and studio at Belmont, the cottage routinely was occupied by servants of then-owner Joseph B. Ficklen. The archeological examination will help determine the building’s evolution over time, the different periods of construction and use, and, possibly, information about the people who lived or worked in the building.
Gari Melchers Home and Studio contains several additional outbuildings, ranging in age from the early 1800s to barns and support buildings constructed by the Melchers during their time at Belmont. A long range plan for restoration, stabilization and preservation of these buildings is being developed.
Gari Melchers Home and Studio is a 27-acre estate and former residence of the artist
Gari Melchers and his wife Corinne. The property, which is part of the University of Mary Washington, is both a Virginia Historic Landmark and a National Historic Landmark. Located at 224 Washington St. in Falmouth, a quarter-mile west of the intersection of U.S. 1 and U.S. 17, it is open daily, except for major holidays, with an admission charge.
