Radio Show Features UMW Psychology Professor

University of Mary Washington Associate Professor of Psychology Miriam Liss will discuss the link between attachment parenting techniques and feminism in an interview scheduled to air on the “With Good Reason” public radio program. The show, “Humor Works,” will air beginning Saturday, Feb. 23. The interview will focus on the 2012 study “Feminism and Attachment Parenting: Attitudes, Stereotypes, and Misperceptions” by Liss and her colleague Mindy Erchull. The study, based on a survey of hundreds of self-described feminists and non-feminists, shows that attachment parenting techniques, like co-sleeping, breastfeeding and carrying a child in a body sling, are more popular with feminists than non-feminists. The study also reveals that people hold stereotypes about the ‘typical feminist,’ when in fact those stereotypes aren’t true. UMW Concert Band Performs Winter Concert

The University of Mary Washington Concert Band performed its winter concert, featuring some of the great works of the wind band repertoire, on Friday, Feb. 22. UMW’s Concert Band, under the direction of Kevin P. Bartram, is comprised of both UMW students and community musicians. The band performs several times throughout the year and is the premiere concert band at the university. The concert featured Vincent Persichetti’s “Pageant,” Clifton Williams’ “Caccia and Chorale” and David Holsinger’s “Abram’s Pursuit.” The program also included Goldmans’ “Chimes of Liberty March,” “Flights of Passage” and “March of the Irish Dragoons.” “Clifton Williams knew that he was dying when he wrote this moving work, which turned out to be his final piece,” Bartram said of “Caccia and Chorale.” “It is one of the most exciting and moving works ever written for band.” “March of the Irish Dragoons” previews Sir James Galway’s upcoming … [Read more...]

Radio Show Features UMW English Professor

University of Mary Washington Associate Professor of English Gary Richards will discuss images of the U. S. South in Broadway musicals during an interview scheduled to air on the “With Good Reason” public radio program. The show, “The Gospel Roots of Rock and Roll,” will air beginning Saturday, Feb. 16. During the program, Richards will argue that despite the popularity of musicals like Porgy and Bess and Showboat, musicals with southern themes tend to have a negative view of the region and don’t reflect its diversity today. As part of the program, Longwood University professor Chris Kjorness will discuss the legacy of gospel musician and singer Sister Rosetta Tharpe. Richards, who serves as chair of the Department of English, Linguistics, and Communication, is an expert on southern literature and culture, American fiction, contemporary drama and sexuality studies. UMW Continued Theatre Season with Production of “Harvey”

The University of Mary Washington‘s Department of Theatre & Dance continued its 2012-2013 season with a production of “Harvey,” a comedy by Mary Chase. Performances were Feb. 14 to 24 in DuPont Hall’s Klein Theatre. “Harvey” is a comedy about Elwood P. Dowd and his companion, Harvey, a six-and-a-half foot tall invisible rabbit. Dowd’s sister, Veta, is worried that if she does not get him committed he will ruin the family’s social reputation. When she brings him to the sanitarium she is mistaken for a patient and is admitted instead. As the doctors try to right their wrongs, everyone begins to realize that Harvey may be more real than they ever anticipated. Mary Chase, an American journalist and playwright, wrote “Harvey” in 1944. The play premiered on Broadway later that year and became one of the longest running shows on Broadway after nearly four and a half years of performances. Leanna Giancarlo, chair and associate professor of chemistry at the University of Mary Washington, will discuss issues surrounding boosting student performance in science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) fields, during an interview scheduled to air on the “With Good Reason” public radio program. The program, “STEM Education in America,” will air beginning Saturday, Jan. 26. Giancarlo, one of four experts in the program, will explore the negative stereotypes of scientists in pop culture. The program also will feature Linda Rosen, the chief executive officer of Change the Education, Robert Tai, associate professor in the Department of Curriculum, Instruction and Special Education at the University of Virginia and Sevan Terzian, associate professor and associate director of graduate studies at the University of Florida’s College of Education. UMW Psychology Professor Chosen for Air Force Academy Post

Christopher Kilmartin, professor of psychology at the University of Mary Washington, has been chosen to serve as a Distinguished Visiting Professor in the Department of Behavioral Sciences and Leadership at the U.S. Air Force Academy. From July 2013 to June 2014, Kilmartin will teach courses in violence prevention and gender studies. He also will consult with sexual assault prevention personnel at the Air Force Academy to assist in improving the school’s programming. Kilmartin, a licensed clinical psychologist, is an internationally recognized expert on gender and on violence prevention. He held a three-year consultation with the U.S. Naval Academy on a revision of sexual assault and harassment prevention curriculum and worked with the U.S. Army on similar topics. UMW Emeritus Professor Receives VCA Fellowship

Steve Griffin, professor emeritus of art at the University of Mary Washington, is a recipient of a 2012-2013 Artist Fellowship from the Virginia Commission of the Arts. The Virginia Commission of the Arts awards fellowships annually to artists residing in Virginia in recognition of creative excellence and to support their pursuit of artistic excellence. Griffin is one of five Virginia artists honored in the field of painting. Each artist will receive a fellowship of $5,000. Griffin, an accomplished photographer, painter and printmaker, was awarded a Virginia Museum of Fine Arts professional fellowship in 2011. His work has appeared in more than 150 local, regional and national exhibitions. Griffin joined the UMW faculty in 1983 and taught printmaking, photography, drawing and design courses for 25 years. UMW Philanthropy Class Awards Grants to Area Agencies

Students in the University of Mary Washington’s philanthropy class awarded more than $10,000 in grants to three Fredericksburg-area nonprofit organizations: the Lloyd F. Moss Free Clinic; Serenity Home of Fredericksburg; and THRIVE, the Healing Center. Class representative Matt Cronin announced the awards during a check presentation ceremony on Monday, Dec. 3 at the university’s Jepson Alumni Executive Center. The ceremony, streamed live through Google Hangout, was the culmination of the semester-long Economics of Philanthropy and the Nonprofit Sector course taught by Professor of Economics Robert Rycroft. This year, the class of 26 students received 53 applications for the grants, funded by philanthropist Doris Buffet’s Learning by Giving Foundation. “We chose the recipients based off of how well the programs they wanted to fund fit in with our mission statement,” said junior Taylor Knight. Jason James, associate professor of anthropology at the University of Mary Washington, discusses the cultural struggles that persist in post-Nazi Germany during an interview scheduled to air on the “With Good Reason” public radio program. The show, “After the Berlin Wall Came Down,” will air beginning Saturday, Dec. 1. The program will focus on James’ argument that “there are still divisions within German culture – between the ‘good’ former West Germans and the ‘bad’ former East Germans – and that both sides struggle with a problematic past that includes Nazi and Fascist associations.” James is an expert in nationalism, ethnic identity, Germany and East Germany, heritage preservation movements, tourism and collective memory and commemoration of the past. UMW English Professor Awarded National Fellowship

Allison Seay, faculty member in the English department at the University of Mary Washington, has been named a recipient of a National Endowment for the Arts Literature Fellowship in poetry for 2013. The $25,000 award will allow Seay, a 2002 graduate of Mary Washington, to work on a second collection of poetry. Her first book of poetry, “To See the Queen,” is scheduled for publication in March 2013. “It really is such a thrill,” Seay said about the award. “It’s unbelievable, especially looking at the list of my fellow poets. I’m flattered to be in the company of talent like that.” Seay was one of 40 poets chosen from more than 1,100 applicants. The National Endowment for the Arts has awarded creative writing fellowships since 1967, providing writers the time and freedom to pursue their work.
