Educator Bill Bosher Addresses Master’s Candidates, May 10

Dr. William “Bill” Cleveland Bosher Jr., public policy expert and former Virginia superintendent of education, urged University of Mary Washington graduates to hold onto their passion and enthusiasm as they continue in their future paths. Bosher spoke at the University of Mary Washington’s graduate commencement ceremony on Friday, May 10. “I would say to those of you today with new skills and new knowledge: the day that you cease to be excited about young people, I don’t want you teaching mine,” Bosher said. “The day that you cease to be excited about your business or your company or what you sell or what you provide as a service, I don’t want to buy it. Because part of this is not just being prepared with new skills and knowledge, but part of it is the excitement that you have.” Bosher addressed more than 1,000, including graduates, family members, friends and faculty, gathered in the William M. UMW Co-Sponsors Yearlong Business Seminar Series

The University of Mary Washington’s Center for Economic Development and College of Business are collaborating with the Fredericksburg Regional Chamber of Commerce to present a yearlong seminar series on popular business topics. The Business 101 Seminar Series began on Friday, Jan. 18 with Accounting 101, presented by Gladys Gomez, lecturer of accounting in UMW’s College of Business. The series, taught by UMW faculty members, will continue on the third Friday of each month through the end of the year, focused on topics including marketing, customer service, social media, human resources, technology, finance and legal issues. The first six sessions will take place at the Fredericksburg Regional Chamber Office and the final six sessions will take place at UMW’s Small Business Development Center located in Eagle Village, all from 8 to 10 a.m. Registration for each session, limited to 25 participants, is $12, or $100 for the full series of 12 lectures. Shawn Boyer, founder and chief executive officer of, spoke at the University of Mary Washington’s graduate commencement ceremony on Friday, May 11, emphasizing the importance of living a purposeful and intentional life. “Most of us don’t think about our life plans as much as our business plans,” he said, noting the need to establish core values, set goals and choose positive peers. Boyer addressed more than 1,000, including graduates, family members, friends and faculty. The ceremony was the first commencement held at the recently opened William M. Anderson Center. A total of 230 graduate degrees were awarded, including 102 master of education degrees, 73 master of business administration degrees, 30 master of science in elementary education degrees and 21 master of science in management information systems degrees. Nerney, University of Mary Washington’s 2012 Executive-in-Residence, business is about putting the heart first, with a clear focus on the people in the organization and an emphasis on company culture. Nerney, chairman, president and chief executive officer of United States Liability Insurance Group (USLI), spoke to about 100 regional business leaders and community members at a business breakfast on Friday, March 23 at the Jepson Alumni Executive Center. John F. Chappell, former chairman of worldwide pharmaceuticals for SmithKline Beecham, served as a moderator. “We create a team culture,” Nerney said of USLI. “We wake up every day with the goal of being the best we can be.” During the two-day Executive-in-Residence program, Nerney met with students, alumni, faculty and community members to share his experience at the helm of an A++-rated Berkshire Hathaway subsidiary. Six University of Mary Washington faculty members in the College of Business presented papers at the 2012 International Conference on Global Management Studies on Monday, March 5 and Tuesday, March 6 in Cambridge, Mass. The conference, held at the Harvard Faculty Club, was organized by the Association of Global Management Studies.
