The University of Mary Washington Debate Team qualified two groups of students to compete at the National Debate Tournament that began Thursday, March 29 at Emory University in Atlanta, Ga. The tournament, which ran through Monday, April 2, hosted 78 teams this year, all chosen based on a competitive qualification process. UMW has qualified for the National Debate Tournament 16 times in the tournament's 66-year history, finishing as high as third in 2010. Sophomores Patrick McCleary of Shrewsbury, Pa., and Colin McElhinny of Erie, Pa., qualified for the second consecutive year, placing second in the District 7 qualifying tournament, which was hosted by UMW in February. Senior Peter Susko of Erie, Pa., and sophomore Thomas Pacheco of Baltimore, Md., comprise the second team. Susko has previously qualified for the tournament and in 2010 reached the semi-finals. Adrienne Brovero, head debate coach at the University of Mary Washington, was honored with the Ross K. Smith National Coach of the Year Award from the National Debate Tournament. The award, given annually at the Wake Forest University intercollegiate debate tournament, is reserved for exceptional teachers who advance the forensic art. Brovero received this distinction during a ceremony on Friday, November 11 at Wake Forest University. “This award recognizes that Coach Brovero is one of the most distinguished intercollegiate debate coaches in the United States today,” said Timothy O’Donnell, director of debate at UMW. “There is no higher honor in the debate coaching profession and this recognition by her peers affirms what we at UMW have long known – Adrienne Brovero is one of the best debate coaches in the country.” Under Brovero’s leadership, members of the UMW debate team have been among the top 16 teams in the nations for much of the past five years, including … [Read more...]

A group of University of Mary Washington students participated in the University of Southern California’s Trojan Web Debates in October, with three students making the top 10 and advancing to the final week of debates. Freshman Steven Apruzese, senior Charles Girard, sophomore Tan Handres and freshman Michael Jaster each argued the topic: “Should same sex marriage be the top priority of the LGBT civil rights movement?” Girard placed sixth in the tournament, Apruzese placed ninth and Handres placed tenth. The debate marked the first time any of the four students had competed in intercollegiate debate. “The four of us camped out in the James Farmer Multicultural Center well after midnight on most nights because the videos were always due at 3 a.m.,” Girard said. “We got to know each other and really learned a lot from each other regarding debating, as well as from the debates themselves.” The two-week online intercollegiate debate tournament started with 18 … [Read more...]

Candidates for the 17th district seat in the Virginia Senate will participate in a debate at the University of Mary Washington. The session will be held Thursday, November 3 in Monroe Hall, Room 116 at 7:30 p.m. and is open to the public without charge. The debate will present two candidates for the seat: Democratic incumbent Edd Houck, director of corporate and community programs for MediCorp in Fredericksburg and a former educator, and Republican challenger Bryce Reeves, a small business owner and a retired captain from the United States Army. The 17th district includes all of Culpeper, Louisa, Madison, Orange and Spotsylvania Counties and part of Fredericksburg City. The panelists include Dick Hammerstrom, local news editor of the Free Lance-Star, and Ted Schubel, news director of News/Talk 1230 WFVA-AM.
