All Commencement ceremonies will be held on the outdoor Campus Recreation Field, rain or shine. Severe weather will cause cancellation.
The University will not be ticketing lots during commencement ceremonies unless a vehicle is inappropriately parked in spaces reserved for individuals with disabilities or blocking fire lanes.
Traffic is likely to be bad, especially on the weekend. With I-95 construction and one closed bridge in Fredericksburg, the city has experienced major backups in recent weeks. Here are three important tips to help minimize traffic congestion and parking issues:
- Allow ample time to travel to campus.
- Plan to arrive no earlier than one hour prior to your ceremony event start time.
- At the conclusion of the event, please exit the field quickly and depart the parking garage immediately.
The most convenient spot will be the parking garage adjacent to the Campus Recreation Field. This is accessed by turning onto Alvey Drive from U.S. 1, just north of College Avenue. Once on Alvey, the entrance to the parking deck will be on your immediate left. During Commencement, Alvey Drive will be restricted to one-way traffic entering from Route 1.
At the entrance to the parking deck, a University employee will ask to see your event ticket and direct you to proceed to a lower level of the garage.
Additional parking is available across U.S Route 1 in the Eagle Village lot (behind Sweet Frog) with access to the field using the pedestrian overpass.
Students are encouraged to park in the various parking lots across campus and walk to the lineup area on Sunken Road.
Arriving at the Ceremony
If parking in the Alvey parking deck, go to the ground level and proceed to one of the three Recreational Field entrance gates. There, another University employee will ask to see your event ticket, and ushers will direct you to your reserved seating spot.
Guests from other areas may access the field by steps near the entrance to the parking garage.
For attendees who are mobility restricted, there is an elevator available; it can be accessed on each level. Also, there will be a limited number of ADA parking spaces available on the ground level.
Leaving the Ceremony
When leaving the parking deck, all vehicles must proceed to the bottom level and exit out the rear gate onto Sunken Road. There will be city police units assisted by campus officers directing traffic out of the neighborhood and onto William Street. By turning right onto William Street, vehicles can easily proceed to Route 3, which intersects with both Route 1 and I-95. Or proceed left onto William Street into Downtown Fredericksburg, where you can explore the many fine shops and eateries.
