HEERF I,II & III: Emergency Student Aid

HEERF III: Higher Education Emergency Relief fund from the American Rescue Plan

HEERF III: Emergency Grant Funding

As a result of Congress passing the American Rescue Plan, UMW has been allocated $3,960,747 in emergency student aid to assist eligible students who incurred “expenses related to the disruption of campus operations due to coronavirus, such as food, housing, course materials, technology, health care, and child-care expenses.”

HEERF III/ARP placed an emphasis on financial need. As a result in order to be eligible UMW students must have completed a 2021-22 FAFSA and have an expected family contribution (EFC).

A. On 8/2/2021 all Pell eligible students enrolled for fall 2021 were awarded $1,000.

B. Fall 2021: UMW Students who reached out to the office of financial aid with financial challenges as result of the pandemic were reviewed and awarded where applicable.

C. Spring 2022
A tiered distribution plan was established in part from the CARES/HEERF committee in alignment with the U.S. Department of Education’s guidance. Distribution was based on Estimated Family Contribution (EFC), housing and enrollment.

Tier 1: 0-5800; $750-$2,000 (Minimum 1 credit)
Tier 2: 5,801-10,000; $1,000-$1,500 (Minimum 6 credits)
Tier 3: 10,001-15,000; $500-$750 (Minimum 6 credits)

D. An application for HEERF III funds is now available for the spring 2022 semester.

HEERF III/ARP placed an emphasis on financial need. As a result in order to be eligible UMW students must have completed a 2022-23 FAFSA and have an expected family contribution (EFC).

A. Fall 2022: A tiered distribution plan was established in part from the CARES/HEERF committee in alignment with the U.S. Department of Education’s guidance. Distribution was based on Estimated Family Contribution (EFC), housing and enrollment.

Tier 1: 0-6206; $1,000-$2,000 (Minimum 1 credit)
Tier 2: 6,207-10,000; $1,000-$2,000 (Minimum 1 credit)
Tier 3: 10,001-15,000; $500-$1,000 (Minimum 6 credits)

B. An application is available for students to complete.

Acknowledgement of Funding and Certification
UMW was not required to submit a new application or certification to the U.S. Department of Education for use these funds. In keeping with the terms of the certification, UMW will use no less than the minimum required amount ($3,960,747) received under Section 2003(a)(1) of the ARP to provide emergency financial aid grants directly to students.

The total emergency grant funding received from the Department of Education.
UMW has been allocated and eligible to receive $3,960,747 in Higher Education Emergency Relief Fund – Emergency Financial Aid Grants to Students (HEERF III).

Funds Distributed to Date
As of 9/30/2021 UMW has distributed a total of $666,605 to students.

Student Eligibility: estimated total number eligible
As of 9/30/21 – It is estimated that 2,144 students may have potentially been eligible to receive a HEERF III Grant.

The total number of students who have received the HEERF III Grant
As of 9/30/2021 683 students have received a grant from this program.

Methods used to determine which students received emergency grants and how much

As of 12/31/2021 1105 students have received a grant from this program.

The 2021-22 FAFSA was utilized in determining students with need via the EFC (expected family contribution).

A. On 8/2/2021 all Pell eligible students enrolled for fall 2021 were awarded $1,000.

B. Fall 2021: UMW Students who reached out to the office of financial aid with financial challenges as result of the pandemic were reviewed and awarded where applicable.

As of 9/30/2022 904 students have received a grant from this program.
