Reframing Success
Arriving at the University of Mary Washington from Ireland, Matthew Clinton ’26 planned to study computer science. But sometimes the best discoveries happen when you decide to change course. Clinton, now a senior communication and digital studies major, found his true calling as a visual storyteller.
His pivot opened doors he never expected, including a role as content creator for University Communications. During his video production internship, he conceived, shot and edited “Global Perspectives: The International Student Experience at UMW,” a four-part video series that earned him a “Best Content Creator” award.
“The internship was a great way to learn more about the industry and opportunities that my newly gained skills could open up for me,”Clinton said.
Raven Jackson, a consultant who works with UMW students each semester, praised Clinton’s dedication, saying “he takes feedback seriously, and it shows in his work. He’s very passionate about his craft.”
As a rugby player and social media manager for the team, he captured and edited gameplay footage. When injuries sidelined him, he pivoted to livestream commentary and technical support during games – turning a setback into a new opportunity.
Clinton aims to run his own video production company one day, combining his athletic background and media expertise.
“What an honor,” he said. “This experience has greatly impacted my life professionally.”
