Finance

Finance

The Finance major provides students with a sound foundation to move in a broad range of professional directions in Finance including the public, governmental, private, and not-for-profit sectors.  In addition to having many UMW graduates working in these various areas, the College of Business invites many UMW graduates back to campus to interact with current students. The Finance major provides students with an opportunity to study investment analysis, management of banks and other financial institutions, and the financial management of corporations and other businesses.

Degree Awarded

The Finance Major is one of five majors offered within the College of Business leading to the Bachelor’s of Science (B.S.) degree in Business Administration.

Kinesiology

Kinesiology

The Kinesiology major is designed for students pursuing careers in Physical Therapy, Occupational Therapy, Sports Medicine, and Athletic Training, or graduate study in Exercise Sciences, Kinesiology, and Physiology. This major track provides students with the discipline-specific knowledge and skills to be successful candidates for careers and graduate study in a broad range of exercise/ rehabilitation/ sports and medical fields.

Degree Awarded

Students who complete all requirements earn the degree of Bachelor of Science (B.S.) in Biology with a major in Kinesiology.

Management and Entrepreneurship

Found Something You Love

The management and entrepreneurship major at Mary Washington provides the foundation to start a business in for-profit, non-profit, and public sector contexts, or be a leader in any organization. Building from the common core classes it focuses in on the foundations of entrepreneurship, organizational behavior, development and change, and entrepreneurial venture creation. The major equips students with comprehensive understanding and competency in management functions, coupled with vital entrepreneurial mindset and skills crucial for fostering innovation.

Degree Awarded

Students majoring in Management and Entrepreneurship who complete all requirements earn the degree of Bachelor of Science (B.S.) in Business Administration with a major in Management and Entrepreneurship.

Areas of Study

UMW’s bachelor’s program in business administration lets you major in accounting, general business, management and entrepreneurship, or marketing. In addition, the program covers information systems and applications, applied statistics and business research, legal environment of business, principles of management, federal taxation, organizational behavior, human resource management, decision analysis, principles of finance, commercial law, consumer behavior, leadership theory and practice, negotiation, and more.

Career Opportunities

Management and entrepreneurship majors start their own businesses, or launch startups, work in large or medium-sized organizations to develop new and innovative products or services, work in finance industry and with investment firms to support upcoming new ventures, engage in social entrepreneurship by creation of new ventures that address community or social issues, or engage in family business management by taking leadership roles in family-owned businesses.

Applied Economics

Know economics, then make it work.

How do the theories of economics play out in the production, distribution and consumption of goods and services? The applied economics major at Mary Washington equips you with practical ways of thinking about the interactions among consumers, businesses, and entire economic systems. You’ll ground yourself in quantitative analysis and methods, computing, research and communication – skills to help you understand and solve problems at every level of industry and commerce.

Students majoring in Applied Economics who complete all requirements earn the degree of Bachelor of Science (B.S.) in Economics.

Areas of Study

Pursuing a degree in applied economics allows majors to study microeconomics; macroeconomics; and industrial, environmental, health, urban, and regional economics. Among the courses you may take are economics of social issues; poverty, affluence, and equality; government and business; money and banking; public finance; philanthropy; the history of economics; and investment analysis. You’ll learn data collection and qualitative data analysis, statistical and econometric analysis, computer skills, math skills, and more.

Career Opportunities

Applied economics majors gain a thorough understanding of the principles of economics at UMW. Graduates hold such positions as analyst for the Bureau of the Census, CEO of Animators at Law (a provider of litigation support services in graphics and technology), claims investigator for Geico Insurance, accountant and trader for Sempra Energy Trading Corp., economics teacher in the Peace Corps, investment broker at A.G. Edwards & Sons, and researcher with the Federal Deposit Insurance Corp.

Internships

UMW’s proximity to Washington, D.C., and a supportive local business community create diverse internship opportunities. Students have benefited from internships with SunTrust Mortgage, Edward Jones Investments, the Washington Capitals, CNN’s Crossfire, Booz Allen Hamilton, the Environmental Protection Agency, Prudential Securities, the First Nations Development Institute, Paine Webber, and the Virginia Credit Union.

To be eligible for departmental honors in economics, a student must complete the major with a minimum 3.5 GPA in the major and successfully write an honors thesis.

The applied economics major requires 39 credits, including nine core courses and four electives.

Numerous scholarships and awards are available for economics majors. Among them are the James Harvey Dodd Award for a junior economics major based on financial need and academic achievement. The Adam Smith Award is given to a graduating senior based on potential for graduate study. The Fred E. Miller Memorial Scholarship is awarded to a rising junior or senior who is double-majoring in economics and business administration.
