Jonathan Albright, assistant professor of communications at Elon University, will present the 2017 DeAngelo Lecture on Thursday, Jan. 26, at 6:30 p.m. in the Hurley Convergence Center Digital Auditorium.
Albright’s research into the fake news phenomenon and how it shaped the recent presidential election was featured in “Google, democracy, and the truth about internet search” by Carole Cadwalladr in the Dec. 4, 2016, edition of The Guardian. Albright shared his analysis of what he called the fake news ecosystem in a series of posts on Medium.com. Albright crawled and indexed 117 websites and analyzed the patterns of links that emerged. The result is, in Albright’s words, “something like Mr. Robot meets House of Cards.”
Albright, who has taught at Elon since 2014, previously worked for both Yahoo and Google technology companies and consulted for McClatchy Company news service. He received a Ph.D. from the University of Auckland and an M.S. from the University of Oregon.
The DeAngelo Endowed Lecture Series honors the life and work of Rachael Wingfield DeAngelo, who graduated from Mary Washington College in 1928. The lecture series brings to campus scholars and other experts who can address the changing landscape of library and information science.
