University of Mary Washington alumna Haley Kane, a 2016 graduate and recent member of the university field hockey team, was named as the 2015-16 female senior scholar-athlete of the year by the Capital Athletic Conference.
The award is given to senior student-athletes who have a minimum 3.5 cumulative grade point average, demonstrate athletic success and contribute to their program. The fifth UMW student-athlete to receive the award since its inception in 1992, Kane graduated this past May as a psychology major with a 4.0 grade point average.
“I hold myself to really high standards,” said Kane in an interview before she graduated. “I wanted to fully experience what a liberal arts school could offer. I wanted to take hold of everything, and I think I did a pretty good job.”
Kane led UMW’s Division III field hockey team through four seasons, three of them as captain. She’s twice been named scholar-athlete of the year by both UMW and the National Field Hockey Coaches Association (NFHCA). And given her perfect grade point average, she was one of three students to receive the university’s prestigious Colgate W. Darden Jr. Award, given to the senior with the highest grade point average.
