The University of Mary Washington Community-Symphony Orchestra will host the Kingston Trio as part of the William M. Anderson, Jr. Celebrity Series. The concert, which is a centennial event, will be held on Friday, April 18 at 7:30 p.m. in George Washington Hall, Dodd Auditorium.
The event is open to the public. Tickets are $35 for general admission and $25 for members of Friends of the Orchestra.
Throughout the late 50s and 60s, the Kingston Trio created a national audience for American folk music, ushering in the “folk revival” that set the stage for artists like Bob Dylan and Peter, Paul & Mary. Since the beginning of the band in 1957, the Trio has had numerous Top 40 hits, including the songs “Where Have All the Flowers Gone?” and “Tom Dooley,” which reached number one on the charts in 1958. In addition, the group has won two Grammy awards and was inducted into the Vocal Group Hall of Fame in 2000. Currently, Bill Zorn, George Grove and Rick Dougherty make up the Kingston Trio.
The Celebrity Series is sponsored by Wachovia. The UMW-Community Symphony Orchestra includes students at the university, as well as members from the surrounding Fredericksburg area. The orchestra is directed by Kevin P. Bartram.
