The University of Mary Washington Eagle Pipe Band placed first at the Ohio Valley Championship pipe band competition during the Ohio Scottish Games in Wellington, Ohio. At the June 28 event, the UMW band competed against 10 bands from Michigan, Ohio and Pennsylvania.
Last fall, the band won the Grade V pipe band competition at the Richmond Highland Games and Celtic Festival.
The group was founded in 1996 under the direction of Raymond Scott, UMW professor of chemistry. The band is made up of UMW students and alumni who perform for university and local events. The musical repertoire includes original tunes and dances in addition to more traditional selections. Practices are held weekly on Sunday afternoons and membership is based on audition.
The Eagle Pipe Band also funds scholarships for qualified pipers, drummers and dancers who attend UMW.
