The Department of Art and Art History at the University of Mary Washington announced several student awards at the opening of the Annual Student Art Exhibition recently at the duPont Gallery. The event was judged by Fiona Ross, adjunct assistant professor at University of Richmond.
Ross selected 44 works for the exhibition from more than 100 submissions and chose recipients of the media awards, the Emil Schnellock Award in Painting and the Melcher Gray Purchase Award.
The Emil Schnellock Award in Painting was given to senior Phoebe McMullen of Waterford, Va., for “Faded Memories.” The Department of Art and Art History presents the award to recognize excellence in painting. The Melchers Gray Purchase Award was given to Sophomore Katie Rosinski of Ocean Pines, Md., for “White Rabbits.” The sculpture will become part of the university’s permanent collection.
The following students received awards at the ceremony: sophomore Julian Ensign of Mechanicsville, Department Award in Ceramic for “Boot”; sophomore Elizabeth Bradley of Stafford, who also took the Department Award for Digital Media for “Keyboard Kid” and the Department Award for Drawing for “PacMan”; senior Rachel Anne Blier of Alexandria, Department Award for Mixed Media for “Do the Spirits Come Back”; senior Katherine Matusik of Annandale, Department Award for Photography for “Previsualization Series” and Department Award for Printmaking for “Honestly Abe”; senior Kim Quarforth of Manassas for “Harlequin”; senior Sarah Lapp of Fredericksburg, Department Award in Textile Design for “It’s Greener”; sophomore Elizabeth Bradley of Stafford was awarded the Anne Elizabeth Collins Award in Graphic Arts.

The Student Art Exhibition runs through Sunday, April 18 in the duPont Gallery, located on College Avenue at Thornton Street. Gallery hours are Monday through Friday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. and weekends from 1 to 4 p.m. The exhibition is open to the public without charge and some of the artwork is for sale.
In conjunction with the Annual Student Art Exhibition, the Fredericksburg Visitor Center at 706 Caroline St. is hosting the “Salon des Refusés” exhibition. The “Salon des Refusés,” which features works that were not accepted for the juried student show, will be displayed during the month of April.
