The University of Mary Washington Eagle Pipe Band placed first in the pipe band competition at the Celtic Festival of Southern Maryland. At the April event, the UMW band competed against seven bands from Virginia, Maryland, Pennsylvania, Ohio and New Jersey.
The band has been a top contender in pipe band competitions across the country, including first place at the 2009 Richmond Games, the 2009 Meadows Games in Caroline County and the 2008 Ohio Scottish Games, and second place at the 2009 Glasgowlands competition in Northampton, Mass., that included 11 pipe bands from New York, New Jersey, Massachusetts, Connecticut and New Hampshire.
The Eagle Pipe Band was founded in 1996 under the direction of Raymond Scott, professor of chemistry. The band is made up of UMW students and alumni who perform for university and local events. The musical repertoire includes original tunes and dances in addition to more traditional selections. Practices are held weekly on Sunday afternoons and membership is based on audition.
The Eagle Pipe Band also funds scholarships for qualified pipers, drummers and dancers who attend UMW.
