The University of Mary Washington Department of Art and Art History announced its student awards at the opening of the Annual Student Art Exhibition, which will run through Sunday, April 17 at the duPont Gallery.
Steve Griffin, UMW professor emeritus of art, selected works for the exhibition from more than 100 submissions, and he chose recipients of the media awards—the Emil Schnellock Award in Painting and the Melchers Gray Purchase Award.
The Emil Schnellock Award in Painting was given to senior Tenee’ Hart of Stafford, Va., for “The Goats.” The Department of Art and Art History presents this award to recognize excellence in painting.
The Melchers Gray Purchase Award was given to junior Elizabeth Bradley of Stafford, Va., for “Over the Edge.” The painting will become part of the university’s permanent collection.
The following students received awards at the exhibition’s March 31 opening ceremony:
• Senior Ginna Zell of Manassas, Va., won the Department Award in Ceramics for “Ready for Flight” and also took the Department Award in Printmaking for “Wall of Fear”;
• Freshman Katie Sleyman of Manassas, Va., took the Department Award for Digital Media for “Halyomorpha Halys”;
• Sophomore Alice Watkins of Henrico, Va., took the Department Award for Drawing for “Passive Observer of the Ordinary”;
• Sophomore Mattson Fields of Arlington took the Department Award for Mixed Media for “Psyche/Self-portrait”;
• Senior Lauren Scott of Lynchburg, Va., took the Department Award for Photography for “College Student Series”;
• Freshman Claire McKinley of Florida, Va., took the Department Award in Sculpture for “Untitled: I Love You Carole”;
• Senior Gina Dargan of Fredericksburg, Va., took the Department Award for Textile Design for “Untitled: I Love Her Too”; and,
• Sophomore Mattson Fields of Arlington, Va., was awarded the Anne Elizabeth Collins Award in Graphic Arts.
Students who received “honorable mention” awards include:
• Freshman Christina Bendo of Leesburg, Va., for ceramics;
• Senior Lauren Horton of Dahlgren, Va., for digital media;
• Sophomore Elizabeth Botha of Reston, Va., for drawing;
• Junior Ashleigh Buyers of Stafford, Va., for mixed media;
• Junior Lindsay Evans of Pennsylvania for painting;
• Senior Tenee’ Hart of Stafford, Va., for photography;
• Sophomore Ako Nagahama of Virginia Beach, Va., for printmaking;
• Senior Ginna Zell of Manassas, Va., for sculpture; and,
• Junior Emilia Stern of New York for textile design.
The student art exhibition, to be held through April 17 in the duPont Gallery on College Avenue at Thornton Street, is open to the public without charge and some of the artwork is for sale.
The duPont Gallery is open Monday through Friday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. and Saturday and Sunday from 1 to 4 p.m. Free parking is designated for gallery visitors in a lot across College Avenue at Thornton Street.
In conjunction with the student art exhibition, the Fredericksburg Visitor Center will host the “Salon des Refusés” exhibition. The “Salon des Refusés,” which features works that were not accepted for the juried student show, will be displayed during the month of April.
